$500 box of Kennedy Halves.....Found Silver

VetterVetter Posts: 903 ✭✭✭✭✭
Well after reading what some other people have found in a $500 box of Kennedy's, I ordered one from my bank. It didn't take as long to go through them as I thought. This is what I found. 14 40% Kennedy's and 2 Franklin's. Not the mother load, but not a waist of time either.

i think that is a good haul. two frankies alone should be 12 bucks in silver.
  • Doesn't get much better than finding silver at face value.
  • Lucky duckimage I gave up on searching machine-rolled halves, because I never found anything. But then again, I guess it's kind of like the lottery: 'you gotta be in it to win it'. If you don't search, you'll never find anything of value.
  • MOST EXCELLENT!

  • Enjoy it.
It may be sometime before you get such a good box again.
  • That's awesome. I didn't know one could order boxes of coins from the bank. I've been gathering junk silver through eBay auctions at slightly under melt value and thought I was doing well. Goes to show what I know. image
  • Ok, im a rook at this but, this may sound like a dumb question, but i kind of new to this looking for silver, what are the cut off dates for coins with silver?

  • congrats...

I went to the bank last friday to get change for the kids Easter eggs. Among the other denominations, I asked for 2 half dollars.
To my surprise one was a 1968D. 1 out of 2 ain't bad.
BTW the kids didn't get the silver.

Nice finds. The boxes in my area seem to be about tapped out. I have come across a small number of 40% silver halves in the many boxes that I have searched over the past couple of years, but for some reason have only ever found one 90% silver half-dollar (a 1964). I've never really had any decent luck with these.
  • This is news to me too... so does the bank charge a fee for the box or is it just the face value of the coins that you have to pay for?
  • i bought two rolls of halves today and was lucky to find a 68 D and a 69 D. not bad for face value. i will try to post a pic later on when i have more time on my hands.....feeling lucky todayimage
    Change is good!

It depends upon the bank. Most do not charge but there are some that do. You need to ask your bank.

I've never paid for a box that I ordered but I had to pay to get rid of them on one occasion. I'm not saying that all charge you to get rid of them but some do and again, some don;t.

Not a dumb question at all, but rather an essential one, because you need to know what you are looking for. 'Junk Silver' as the term is commonly used refers to either of the following:1) pre-1965, dimes, quarters and half dollars which all contain 90% silver; and 2) 1965-1970 half dollars which contain 40% silver. When people say that they are looking for silver, they mean that they are searching rolls for these type of coins. If you hold up a silver coin and a clad (copper-nickel) coin, you will see that their edges each have very distinctive colors. Happy hunting!

I got 2 $500 boxes once and found 1 90% and 2 40%. I also had a 1987-P in one of the rolls, which are apparently harder to find than silver. Not a complete loss, but not quite a big score. Took me forever to spend all of them. I'm not aware of any banks in my area that offer free coin counting and I wasn't willing to roll them all or pay the coinstar fee. Would maybe try this again if anyone knows any places in the Los Angeles area that has a free coin counting machine, would even open a new account for the service.

It sure can be a fun way to get some free silver image
  • I am picking up $1000 in halves this afternoon. I got SKUNKED on the last $1000 box, but have found 2 Walkers, 2 Franklins, 30 or so 90% silver and about 60 40% silvers. I am also trying to get two sets put together with my YNs, so I have fun even if there isn't any silver. I have found quite a few proof halves and even two silver proofs (these are always surprising). Wish me luck!!!

I was at the bank and asked for rolls they had none so I asked to order the box and they had one in the vault. I have opened about 20 rolls and have 2 1964's so far. Just hope for a couple more.

  • I had a lady who was pretty rude to me when I asked if I could order a box of $500 worth. She said that they don't like to cater to coin collectors because they're a "bank" and not a coin shop. It may not have helped that I didn't bank with them? image Anyway, I ended up finding a box but I haven't gone all the way through it yet... about 1/3 so far and no silver. I've been looking online but I'm not sure what other dates to look for other than the silver dates. It looks like the 1970-D may be worth a little more according to a site I found, but I'm not really sure where to go for a reference on prices for the post 1965's ?
  • From reading some of the posts here, I gather that fee-free coin counting machines are rare. Today, I went to one of my local banks that has a coin counting machine. Like I've done a few times before, I tossed in about eleven dollars in half dollars and pennies that I had searched. As I took my receipt, I first noticed the new sticker on the machine advising a fee schedule for non account holders (like me). For the first $10.00, there was a $3.00 fee (ouch) and there was a sliding, percentage scale for larger amounts. In the past, it was free, and the tellers always cheerfully cashed your receipts. Evidently, management got tired of non-customers dumping cans and gunnysacks full of change into their machine, and running up correspondingly higher maintenance expenses. No problem - "they'll waive the fee the first time if I ask nicely," I thought, as I strolled up to the teller window. Wrong. As it turns out, they had a new computerized system that required an account number to be keyed in when redeeming receipts from the coin machine. Not even the manager could override it. I didn't quite have the chutzpah to ask the teller or manager to cash it for me using their personal account numberimage So my options were: 1) eating the $3.00 fee; 2) opening a checking account. I was about to opt for the former when I remembered my sister has an account at this bank, and I could just have her cash it in for me. Good thing that I didn't dump in a thousand dollars worth of half dollars this time. Anyway, moral of the story: read the signs, stickers or small print. And always remember-there are no free lunches.
  • Nice find, you did good!
