Yes a Gold Buffalo Question...

ElKevvoElKevvo Posts: 4,133 ✭✭✭✭✭
Not to rehash the old 'Gold Buffalo' threads from the days of yore but is there anything at all special about 2008 Buffalo Celebration coin? Is it the same as a regular bullion buff but just in a fancy box? Looking at the Mint's website I cannot identify anything that is overly special about the coin itself but I know little of these things.

Thanks!

Nice coins.. but only the box is special... Cheers, RickO
  • Just curious, why to we call it a "Buffalo"? I mean, it isn't, is it? How did this get started? Not national pride or anything- it is just that when I see this magnificent animal depicted on a coin, a buffalo is not the first thing that comes to mind. Respectfully, John Curlis

So do you want to change all the references to reflect the 1913-1938 American Bison 5c series?
  • Yes, North American Bison, don't you think? Or North American Indian? But the question was- how did this get started? Respectfully, and Without Malice, John Curlis

Well, in the 19th Century American West we had "buffalo hunters," "buffalo rifles," "buffalo robes," "buffalo soldiers" and "Buffalo Bill Cody," so I guess you can safely say that "buffalo" is the comman American usage to describe the "bison."

Glad to be of service. Maybe I should reshoot them with a better camera before I send 'em back to the Mint...
