Tare Weight of ICG slab?

Does anybody happen to know the tare weight of the ICG slabs? I want to try to figure weight of a coin that is currently slabbed (although I will probably crack the slab eventually). The slad is for a Roman denarius. Thank you.

Did somebody say "Roman denarius"? Oh, do tell what it is. image

Dunno the tare weight, but I suppose you could find somebody to crack one and weigh the fragments.

Give ICG a call and ask them.

LM - A new purchase in a new field for me (did Greek gold 30 years ago). The Roman market doesn't seem to be as quality sensitive as some other markets ...

ajaan - well, it sounded like a good idea. They can't help me .... say I should send them the coin and they will crack it and weight the coin for the nominal sum of $5. I gave them all needed specifics (like 20mm gasket), etc. No range of weights or anything.

  • Richard,

Call and ask for Roger Edelman, the CEO and explain you just want a weight for the 20mm gasket, slab and label....thats it. They shouldnt make you pay $5 and have to mail the coin in.

  • Cameron - Thank you but you know the people, I don't. And, I don't wish to impose further. I have an idea - would you be so kind as to weigh one of your sample ICG slabs with a Jefferson nickle in it and tell me the weight? Then I can subtract the known weight of the nickle. That should be close enough for my purposes.

PS - interesting site you have on the sample slabs!

    Hi Richard...

An ICG slab with a nickel weighs 1.2 ounces or 33 grams on my postal scale.

Found it! Well, if nickel + mount=33g and a nickel is 5g, then tare weight is 28g. My Roman encased weighs 31.2g so weight of coin is 31.2-28= 3.2g.

I really appreciate all the help.
