Stolen 1952 Mantle

This would really suck.

Mickey Mantle rookie card stolen in Orange Park sports shop burglary
Posted: Monday, March 17th, 2008 at 8:32 am

Burglars busted into Dan’s Sports Cards in Orange Park this morning and stole a set of baseball cards worth $50,000, including a rare rookie of New York Yankee Mickey Mantle.

Owner Dan Williams said the burglary at 2177 Kingsley Ave. occurred shortly before 3 a.m. He said someone cut power to the strip mall where his shop is located and then busted into the business by throwing a piece of concrete through the glass front door.

Once inside, the thief or thieves stole three display cases, including a full set of 1952 Topps cards, including the Mickey Mantle Rookie. Williams said the Mantle card is worth about $20,000. He placed the total loss at $100,000.

Williams is offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of those involved. Anyone with information should called police at 264-6512.

I really HATE to be a "hatter" in this situation, seems like an Insurance scam, what strip mall card shop has a set of 52 topps? A MAntle rookie not graded? Still sucks I had about 200 52 topps stolen when I was 16 years old...why did a 16 YO have 200 52 topps, I guess you could have the same agrument. Just doesn't smell right to me. Can't even find the store inventory on the net. Oh well sucks anyways even if it was just 2008 heritage that was stolen.

Who leaves a '52 mantle in a store? No system battery back-up (even the cheapest systems have that?).. IMO, The leprechauns stole Mickey.
  • Have to agree with some of the other posters on this one....what a 1952 Topps set is doing anywhere outside of a safe deposit box or a very secure safe is beyond me.

Hey, come to think of it, MY Mantle is gone as well!

    Yeah, that's the ticket! image
  • His $1000 reward should get it on the road back to him!

This is a clear case of insurance fraud.

heh I really didnt want to be a hatter in my earlier post, but COME ON!

Did the thieves take the jewlery and mink coats? One of my friends was stealing from his father for years, then like ALL thieves he got greedy and organized a break in and theft. The father LIED and said all this "other" crap got stolen...and guess what???? The kids got CAUGHT with the real stolen mechandise. Then the cops asked "where is the jewelry and mink coats" The kids were like "huh, what mink coats?"...lol Busted insurance fraud! BTW he was asking around people to doctor reciepts for him so I KNOW he lied to the cops...AHOLE!

Not to go negative on this story---if insured, would this not require some sort of proof from the insuree of what was covered on the policy? I would be more interested in the amount of coverage he had. A small card shop(mom and pop size) probably wouldn't carry more than $50,000 to $100,000. I would also want to talk with buyers from the store that shopped there on a regular basis--especially the kids (more likely not to lie) to back up the owner's story.

If all is true--i hope they hang the S.O.B's that did this.image

    Topps rookie.

And everbody is right, who would keep a full set of '52 Topps in a strip mall. At the very least, I'm taking that sucker home with me every night. And really, that is not something you would keep in a store to sell anyway. Auction house for a sale like that.

  • I agree that it seems fishy.

And, like all the card shops in my area, all the expensive stuff is waaaaay in the back and under lock and key.

If this clown had a "$30,000.00" Mick in a regular-ole display case... that seems really weird if you ask me.

  • cohocorpcohocorp Posts: 1,371 ✭✭
i dont buy that story. plus it would be impossible to prove that the mantle wasnt a reprint/copy/counterfeit anyway. there should be a paper trail for something that expensive. so even if he did get someone to write him a bogus receipt, that person would have had to claim the proceeds with the irs on their taxes. if this isnt legit, they are playing a very dangerous game. can he really prove he had the set in the first place? if he really had that set for sale, it wouldnt be sitting in a showcase at a strip mall, it would be in an auction with one of the big aution houses. story doesnt add up. just my opinion.

    In an unrelated story;

  • I can see how some of you guys think it looks fishy, but I think he really got robbed. Just think about it, an antique store can have 100,000's of dollars worth of antiques in the store, and they have to leave it in the store anyway, even the small pieces. Sure its cards were talking about and there small, so why not take the home everyday right? Well, maybe because he got to comfortable with his cards not being stolen for so many years that he got used to it? Who knows?

I'm sure you had that set to attract people when they come in or something, and i'm sure he used to take it home every single day in the begining until he left it there once, then twice, you get the picture. I think somebody really stole it, because I can see a few jerks coming in seing the Mantle and so many other great cards and plan such a thing. People should tka their stuff home every single day when they close, no matter how muh of a hassel it is, because trying to get insurance money for something like this isen't easy at all!

    Really sucks!!!

  • Ladder7 PLEASE tell me that clip isn't real!

Back to the orginial subject, I agree it sounds a bit weird (I would never keep a '52 set in a shop!) but let's give the guy the benefit of the doubt, after all we have all done dumb things before.

    Wow

    That's really sad.

A friend of mine has a shop and all the high end cards and sets get locked up in the safe every nite.

I'm guessing the thief knew what they were looking for?

  • Whether this is true or not, the fact is, that if you want to sell a 1952 Topps set (including a Mantle), you don't let it sit in a case...in a card store....in a strip mall!!! That has to be one of the dumbest things I've heard of. Even if I did have a store, my first stop would be my saftey deposit box or safe (where it should be sitting), and then a major auction house, if I wanted to sell that set. And if it wasn't his intention to sell it, only to attract customers, that's even dumber.

    I dunno.

For an "almost impossible to find" set and assumed several other high priced cards, a $1k reward doesn't sound like much to me.

While I don't have a '52 Mantle, if my collection was stolen, I sure as heck would offer more than $1k.

just from my own experience, he's actually a really nice guy.. he used to have a shop closer to my home, and whenever i went to a local shop it would be Dan's.. he's further away now in Orange Park, but i'd still drive out there before I went anywhere else.. he's always given me good deals..

he's not big into the grading game, i think the most graded cards ive ever noticed at his store was probably 8-10 random cards in slabs, but i havent shopped with him in probably a year..

other people who have dealt with him may disagree, i dunno..

as for whether this is insurance fraud or not, i have no opinion.. however, he should know better than having an ungraded '52 Mantle..

I could see someone having a set like that in the store.

I could also see someone leaving it there unprotected too.

While that does sound strange , I know for a fact it is done and it is done by a friend / shop owner of mine, I mean in his store I know of two items that are left out that border that price , not to mention at least another 2.5 mil in other stuff just laying all over the place ,

That is not to say his security situation is the same as that
    ACME/Mickey Mouse security system
Seems beyond lame in every way , Nothing like being quiet when the guys were breaking in too throwin concret through the door , they knew exactly what they were going for , no question .

On the surface it seems so shady, I'd like to know the final outcome on that one .

For a thousand bucks though, he aint really askin for much help

a 1952 topps set was in that type of showcase????? when the article said the theft included 3 showcases, i assumed they meant the contents of 3 heavy standup jewelry type cases, not these types you can just pick up. if its true, i am sure he had it documented the purchase properly and so did the previous owner through tax returns. unless of course it is a consignment from someone who inherited it. hopefully he is insured for $250,000+ to get paid on it since there is still plenty of inventory left since the thieves only took 3 showcases. curious to see if the claim gets paid or not. it is a shame he got robbed in the first place. the odd thing is that with all the stores i have been to since i got into this industry in 1988, not 1 ever had a full 1952 topps set on location. my best guess if that the average store had maybe a total of $50,000 for the entire contents. this must be one special store.

p.s. i actually have this set psa graded 5.56 and even if i did sell it, no chance in hell would it ever be in a showcase in a store in a stripmall.

I would suggest installing cameras--if he hasn't done so already. I see 6+ framed jerseys hanging on the wall and in the case you clearly see alot of 50's and 60's cards. If they only hit the vacant spot on the table, these people were in his store prior to this. They new exactly what to go for.

Yea, that is a nice looking shop , looks like lots of goodies !

If you guys wanna see a mind blowing shop You have to see Cardboard Memories in E. Northport Long Island , as a matter of fact he just bought a new building and put a few of those giant screen TV's in there , it is not finished yet, but this guy has the most stuff I have ever seen anywhere as a matter of fact he has more autographed memorabilia than I have seen EVERYWHERE !

By far the most amazing shop I have ever been to .
I am really happy he got a new place , he has needed the room for a while , stuff is litterally stacked from ceiling to floor , I don't even think he knows what he has, stuff has been buried for so long .

When he finally makes the big move he is going to be holding a huge sale so he has less to actually move , I can not wait for that !

I have wondered on more than one occasion how he could keep all that valuable stuff in that store , but where the heck are you supposed to put it all? You're not throwing a rock through his window though because he has the roll down steel doors.

In this guy's case though I would have secured those cases because it does not seem there is all that much "extremely" valuable stuff, but it is so easy to second guess after the fact .

Well, someone that didn't have some really wonderful cards , does now !
  • TNTonPMSTNTonPMS Posts: 2,279 ✭✭
I have a serious question though if anyone can answer it ?

What if they do find the cards ?

How could this guy prove they are his cards , I mean does he have his name written on them ?

I could see if they were Slabbed By PSA, then you have some proof as to ownership ? is this true or false ?

Another question , what if they were slabbed by PSA and the person sold them , a lot of times I buy cards/ memorabila and never get a receipt and I feel a lot of people do the same , especially at shows .

Memorabilia seems like a very hard thing to prove ownership of because it is constantly being sold or traded , so even if they do find the stuff , I think it will still be hard to prove unless someone has the guy on camera taking the stuff
