i cant figure it out. some opinions here.

i still cant follow the train of thought for those who submit and then sell psa 9s or psa 10s for $3-10 each. the grading fees and shipping fees eat all the $ up. now i can understand if someone tries for a psa 10 and ends up with a psa 9 then has to sell the psa 9 for $10-$15, but only if they can get more than $50 for a psa 10. but how about when the psa 10s only go for like $12. whats the point? i dont mean any disrespect to anyone who does this, i am just lost here. i see a number of sells on the bst for psa 9s and psa 10s for next to nothing. some thoughts?

Some do it for the registry and are strictly collectors, those that do it for resale (like 4SC) must be getting a grading deal.

I would assume that they get bulk rates at 3.00 (or less) for certain issues.

And thus with the shipping they make out with the volume they do.

I have seen the same thing. Perhaps the seller expects the card to sell for more than it does. Some of the 1980's baseball commons will go for big money if they are rare. Also, the seller may hope two people will get into a bidding war for such a card. Otherwise, it does not make any sense to grade a card and turn around and sell it for less than most grading fees.

I talked to one cardshop owner about this once. He said why should we assume everyone on Ebay is trying to make money, maybe some guys are just killing time, and don't worry about losing a few bucks on any one transaction. Hard to figure, but perhaps it's true.
Running an Ebay store sure takes a lot more time than a person would think!

I have OFTEN lost the grading fees on cards/coins/currency/stamps, when I sell.

It's a numbers game; it only takes a few 10s to more than
balance the budget on a big submission.

WinPitcher is right about how the BIG sellers do it.

Feebay is kinda like a giant online bargain box. At every card show most dealers have stuff that is hard to move and can be bought cheap, so if you are sitting on a bunch of PSA 8/9's that don't sell dump-em. IMHO the most successful card dealers are not collectors.

Just want to add one other possibility...

When a guy buys a complete collection - ya take the good with the bad and provide a decent "buy" price.

Now - the profit was made on the good stuff and ya dump the commons - at that point it's kinda like pure profit if ya know what I mean?

Is it safe to assume the cheapest someone can get it slabbed, with shipping fees is about $7?

I think the big guys get it for less then that.

    (less then 7.00)

I'd think 4.00 is what they pay at the most per card including everything.

  • Actually Collect Non Sport, but am just so full of myself I post all over the place !!!!!!!
  • I figured 4SC had to get a good discount.
When I buy from them I try to buy 12 or more cards at a time to get shipping below $1 per card. I'm only spending $4 to $5 per card including shipping on early 70's PSA 8's.

  • Look at some of the math like this too. I buy 700 cards for 1.00 each. Of those 700 I submit 500. At the bulk rate of 6.00 each the submission cost about 350 total after shipping and ins. Of those 500 100 come back 10s. 10 of those 10s are rare hard to find in 10 star cards that sell for 300 to 1000 each. I sell those 10 for an average of 500 each. Thats 5000 dollars. I have made around 3500 off this submission at this point everything else is just gravy, so I list them at just high enough to initially cover Ebay fees and Paypal fees based on the opening bid and liquidate them. Any that go for more than the opening bid is just a bonus.

Huh?? 6.00 x 500 cards is 3 grand not three hundred.

here is an example of what i am talking about. even if you score a psa 10, its still dirt cheap. scroll to the bottom of this bst listing.

    bst example

the major detail of my confusion is ... when there is no large gain for coring the psa 10. i understand when the score is either over $100 or even $40 each if doing quantity. but if its $7 or $9 for a psa 10. then i do not get it.

some people brought up 4sc with the monster bulk subs gettting fees reduced. i am sure they are as they should. heck, anyone who buys bulk gets discounts. buy i wasnt referring to them or ebay at all in this case. i was referring to the bst on here.

i guess i wasnt clear, but i was simply curious as to why slab something for sale whereas the ceiling is @ $10 when fees are roughly have of that?

stone had a good point...but someone slabbed it in the first place. what were they thinking. unless these cards all dropped in price which would mean they were all higher at one point at least and would make some sense.

    Pat

I would think they do things for various reasons.

In the specific case you state I think it is simply because they want it for their own collection at one time.

steve- i guess you hit the nail on the head. thats the only thing that makes sense. obviously i dont follow the modern single market. onthe10s has a bst ad for graded cards at $1 each. this is a good example of losing me. same answer applies i guess. --they (being whoever had the cards graded in the first place) wanted them graded for their own collection at one time.

I think too many people got caught up with the modern grading bug - thinking that commons from 1981 - present would reap huge profits (in a 9 or 10) - tougher times now and people dumping ...
