Home Metal Detecting

I was doing some family research here this week...

Trying to get an idea of where I came from..Well after and exhaustive search and the help of family members. I have my tree back to 1666 in England, From there 1710 my ancestors were in Va. From there they migrated to Ga, when the Cherokee land was divided up and allocated by lottery. Three of my ancestors went to Alabama and settled. One of them, Zachariah Glass, built Fort Glass in Alabama in 1813....where the ruins and area still stands. His sons were killed there in when the British encouraged and backed an Indian raid on the fort. It and another one fell, and his two sons were killed. He eventually came back to Ga, where our tree lives on...

I just love history...

Always a fun project.... although some people find things best left forgotten. image Cheers, RickO
  • Hey everyone---Millennium has family that owns an old fort in Alabama. Do you think you could arrange us all a hunt down there? image I'd find a way to make it there. image

  • BTW, that is pretty cool about your family tree. I've never done a thorough search of my tree--maybe one of these days I'll get around to doing just that.

It's cool diggin' up genealogy. I've done mine back to 1850 looking on handwritten U.S. Census records I've found online. A bunch of poor tenant farmer my family was, with a hiney load of boy children in every family.

Too many positive BST transactions with too many members to list.
  • We have got it back to 1710 in Virginia, I am now getting ready to join the "Sons of the American Revolution"...An organization, where you have to be able to prove you had kin that fought in the American Revolution....So far I have 2 that fought in the American Revolution, 3 that were in the War of 1812, and several that fought in the Civil War........My ancestor that built Fort Glass, lost both of his sons in the ....Battle of Burnt Corn, Alabama.....

We are in the process now of trying to prove back to 1620-1640 on the tree...
  • I find geneology fascinating. One of my Aunts did quite a bit of work on my family's history. My ancestors include Samual Clemens (Mark Twain) and Nathanial Greene, of Revolutionary War fame.

  • Thats' pretty darn cool, Bob.....I know you are proud, I sure would be.
  • When I did some research into my family tree, I found out that my father's side of the family travelled from Jersey, Channel Islands in England to settle in a small community in Newfoundland sometime in the late 1500s... the SAME town my father is from!

How boring is that? My family has spent the last 400 years in the same place... lol
