In the NCAA tournament do you think there will ever be.....

A #16 seed upsetting a #1 seed? These matchups are regarded as little more than a tune up game for the #1's but I guess anything
could happen.

  • doubt it. That would be THE biggest upset in ncaa history. These 16 seeds are fodder for the top 4 teams....and although the committee sometimes overseeds a team at the top (think Tenn and nearly the entire Big Ten two years ago), those overseeded teams should make it past the first round as 16 seeds are typically auto bids from ridiculously bad leagues.

I assume it will happen eventually but the 16 seeds tend to be from REALLY low level conferences. In fact, they probably wouldn't even be competitive in the division II playoffs! I would HATE to have my team be the first team to lose to a 16 seed. I still have friends who make fun of me for UCLA losing to Princeton... what, 10+ years ago?
  • If the format does not change, 50 years from now there will have been 200 opportunities for a 16 seed to win. The chances of it not happening seem pretty low

It will happen sooner rather than later. Most college sports seem to be leveling out the playing field between power-houses and mid-majors, IMHO it is just a matter of when.

It will happen. In fact, there have been close 16/1 games the last couple years. A 16 seed WILL beat a 1 seed, sooner rather than later.

Can't remember the exact year (1990 or 1991), but I sat in Knoxville, TN and watched #16 seed Murray State (with Popeye Jones) take my #1 seeded MSU Spartans to overtime before the Spartans finally won. It will happen someday.

    A #16 will eventually beat a #1 team.

Maybe not this year or next, but some day it will happen.
So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts

1990 to be exact. Murray State isn't too far away from here either.

I remember about 10 years ago San Jose State made the NCAA as a #16 seed and had to play #1 Kentucky. The first half of the game San Jose State was clearly the best team on the floor and it led at half time. However, in the second half, Kentucky finally woke up and started playing in earnest. San Jose State could simply not keep up with the Kentucky players. Kentucky won the game, but it was a fin one to watch.

I suspect that one day a #16 will beat a #1. That would trump the current best upset. A #15 has beaten a #2, at least once, and maybe more than once.

    A #15 seed has beaten a #2 seed at least 4 times.
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

I remember when #16 Princeton almost beat #1 Georgetown. Princeton was probably seeded too low, however. There have been a few #15s beating #2s.

I think Portland State will do it this year! They will take down Kansas. That's my prediction! If they win then all you guys send me a PSA graded card for being right. If I am wrong then just let this thread die and forget I said anything. image

Forget almost beat; Princeton did beat the defending champ UCLA in 1996. That's considered right up there with the big upset stories of NCAA Tournament lore.
