Red Sox release Dougie!

FULL STORY

So yeah, Mirabelli's gone.

I try to remain optimistic and have faith in Theo's decisions, but I'm having a hard time with this one.

I guess time will tell how well Kevin Cash can handle Wake's knuckle.

I'm just sad to see Dougie go. I still maintain (like I do with Tek) if he never hits the ball ever again, has a .000 avg, I'd still keep him for his knuckle-catching abilities.

But hey, I've been wrong before... we'll see.

Feel free to chime in Sox guys.

evidently, Cash is handling Wakefield well. And if he can hit better than Billy Crystal, he'll be ahead of Mirabelli.
  • doug needs to hang it up. slow, no stick anymore and a personal catcher for a knuckleballer who patches once a week.

train the new kid. or have your 10 million dollar a year catcher learn how to catch a knuckleball lol. I'd do it for 5 million image

Yea not a big deal as far as Im concerned, he just takes up a roster spot and Like Leo said he is a once a week player with zero upside of keeping him. Time to let a youngster or someone with at least a hope of upside to him suit up.
  • Oh, Im certainly not "defending" Dougie's offensive abilities, they've been crap for a while.

And I've heard that Cash is handling him well, but his offense is even worse than Dougie's was (from what i've seeon online).

I just wonder is a lower AVG and the occasional passed-ball are worth it?

Thanks for your opinions though guys.

    We'll see how he shapes-up.

Alan, you never know though! We might see an emergency State Police escort into Fenway again!
  • I was just talking with another friend of mine this morning about that very thing...

    Wouldnt that be cool.

I don't agree that Cash's offense is worse than Mirabelli's. Not by a long shot. Mirabelli hit .228, .193, and .202 for Boston the last three seasons. Cash has had some pretty low numbers too, but he has played less and he's what 9 years younger than Mirabelli? Plus, Cash is having a pretty good spring so far (4-16 with 3 runs, a 2B, an HR, and 5 RBI). I'll miss Mirabelli for what he meant to the club the last couple years but this move was a good one.

Hey Perkdog, I'm ready for the Red Sox 2008 thread to start up whenever you are!!!!

Cash was destined for AA ball this year, that's a statement on Mirabelli's potential. He was a value-added team member for a while, but no more.

I still wish they could have taught Bard to catch the knuckler. He hit like .300 with San Diego, right? And they got Cle Meredith too!! image
  • This is the most shocking news I have heard all year

I was certain he was released last November

Just taking up a roster spot. And what do we do if Tek gets hurt? Play Mirabelli for a month?
Nope, time to break in the new guy.

If Cash can hit above the Mendoza line and not run like he's in Quicksand we'll be further ahead IMHO.

    Bard's offense was good...

I think he had more passed balls than hits though.

I'll remain cautiously optimisitc about Cash.

I just hope we don't wind up coughing up another young player to get him back (again).

Always a bummer to lose championship guys. Miss him less than Trot, more than Minkiewicz (or whoever the heck he spells it).
