lordmarcovanlordmarcovan Posts: 43,530 ✭✭✭✭✭
What's the "Best Expedition Photo" for February?
Since this is the first month for this new award category, we're using older pictures, but in the future, entries should be pictures taken in the most recent month.

Well, it looks like our first winner for this category is...

Me. image

Wasn't really supposed to happen that way, but oh well! Thanks for the votes.

It was voted that we should add a photo contest to the monthly "quality" awards. Like the existing "Wild Card" category, it will be a category that any "treasure hunter" (not necessarily a detectorist) can participate in. (And also a good fallback category for folks like yours truly, who occasionally strike out on their quests but still get an interesting photo or two.)

We want to keep it topical, so this is why the title is "Best EXPEDITION photo". This is for pictures taken on outings where some form of "treasure hunting" took place, be it detecting, fossil hunting, mining, prospecting, rockhunting, beachcombing whatever. So mostly it will be for outdoor photos, though somebody might end up posting pictures taken in an old cellar or attic, or a cave or something. Pictures can be of finds, people, wildlife, and/or places.

Let's see some nice landscapes, some exciting treasure hunting "action shots", and some funny (but tasteful) entries, too!

Suggested guidelines for the new category will be:

- Limit three self-nominations per month.

(You may have more than three entries if somebody else nominates other pics of yours, though.)

- Suggested photo size is somewhere around 640x480 if possible, though 800x600 is OK.
(Photos over 800 pixels wide or tall will be disqualified, at least until they've been suitably downsized- and that's the responsibility of the author, not the pollster).

- Photos should be given a short title. For example: "Turkeys In The Field", by ASUTodd.
(Additional info about "who-what-where-why-when" is nice, too, but optional.)

For this first month, there is no time constraint on the entries and some old favorites will be posted, but in the future, it will be for pictures taken from the most recent month only (just as with the other award categories).

During this inaugural poll, I will be taking some liberties with the entries we got, and I had to pick and choose a bit, since some folks posted more than the suggested limit of two or three (and some posted oversized pictures). Additionally, I will take the liberty of making up some of the titles this month in the cases where folks didn't name their pictures. (Titles will be at the pollster's discretion in the future if no title is specified.)

The winner gets nothing but bragging rights and a sigline trophy for a prize, as usual, but that's enough, right? image

Here goes!

"Turkeys In The Field", by ASUTodd.

Taken February, 2008, in North Carolina.

image

(Since Todd's posting this as a "Wild Card" entry gave me the idea that we should have a photo category, this one will be gettin' my vote out of loyalty, but otherwise, I gotta say, I am mighty partial to some of the train shots that BentFork took, which I nominated, as I did with many of these. We have some good photographers here, and it's nice to see the setting and surroundings of people's outings, in addition to the finds.)

"Kayaking", by ASUTodd.

<< <i>Here is a photo that was taken last year when me and my buddy went kayaking in one of the back creeks around his house. I am posting this one because we did have our gold pans with us, I didn't have a metal detector at the time but I do now!!! I will be returning to this spot to check for nuggets with my DFX. I jus thave to wait for the water to drop. More photos of some of our outings goto Outdoor Junkies. This is a MySpace page so you will ned a profile there to view any pics. Our site, OutdoorJunkies.org will be up soon (I've been saying that for over a year now). My buddy and I, Travis, take a to of trips during the year to various places. We usually post pics of our adventures and now that we have metal detectors to add to the fun, well all I can say is just wait till summer!!! If all works out we should have a nice collection of trips and finds under our belts. Lata!

"Bluejay", by lordmarcovan.

Taken January 17, 2008, at the Old Coast Guard Station, East Beach, St. Simons Island, GA.

image

"Avenue Of Oaks", by lordmarcovan.
(Taken at the entrance to the old Retreat Plantation on Saint Simons Island, Georgia.)

image

"Butler River", by lordmarcovan

Taken August 17, 2005, from the Butler River bridge in McIntosh County, GA, on my return from a rather fruitless relic hunt (it was dangerously hot that day).

image

I actually took a more interesting shot seconds later, with a sunburst in the clouds.

It became a sigline picture for me, when cropped and reduced.

That original pic suffers a little from the intrusion of the bridge abutments, but the sky is more interesting than it is in the "purer" picture which I am entering above.

"Twilight Peak", by BentFork.

image

"The Big Guy Chugging Along The River", by BentFork.

image

"Underway Again", by BentFork.

All taken around Durango, CO, Spring, 2007.

"Haunted Farmhouse", by goldrush00013.

An eerie old house in Magnetic Springs, OH, abandoned since a 1956 murder-suicide.

Posted during Virtual Treasure Hunt II, in August, 2005.

"Olentangy River Upstream", by goldrush00013.
Taken October 30, 2006..

"Olentangy River Downstream", by goldrush00013.

image

"Mossy Forest Stones, Finland", by Zot.

image

"Gold Ring Action Shot", by Zot.

image

(Here's the gold snake ring he found that time.)

Finds made near Helsinki, Finland, January 7, 2007, during Round 5 of the Virtual Treasure Hunt III.

These are not the best Zot photos, by any means- just a few I knew how to find with a search.

"Lake Isabella", by DesertRat.

image

"Sierra Nevada", by DesertRat.

image

Pictures were taken in central California (I had to Google Lake Isabella to know that), on January 21, 2008.

Old Hardshell Baptist Church, Brantley County, Georgia", by Millennium.

<< <i>Here's an old Hardshell Baptist Church, located in Brantley County, Ga. Built around the 1850's ..LM and I went there on an outing....although very little was found, I think I did find a wheat cent from the 50's...LM and a friend of mine had one eventful day...I won't go into it here, but needless to say..when the urge hits, you gotta go... >>

(At least you got SOMETHING, Steve... I was the one who "had to go", which cramped my style a bit! image)

"Storm Warning", by Millennium.

image

<< <i>Here's one I took the other day......I had spent all morning getting ready to go out MD'ing.....then this came up........one heck of a rainstorm that had two tornadoes spawned in Fla....this is the front as it came in... >>

(Nice one, Steve- I remember that day- it was kinda scary, for us trailer-dwelling folk. Crazy how dark it got- if it weren't for that one light shining in your pic, I'd have thought that was a B&W photo!)

"Squirrely Bribery", by demodigger.

image

<< <i>ok here's some photo's of me in riccars fav. digging area.
first, gotta bribe the little guys who do the digging for us >>

"Digging A Barber On A Seldom Used Path", by demodigger.

image

"Stairway To Heaven", by demodigger. (Original title: "Top Of The World".)

image

(Nice ones, Brian. I think your "Stone Bridge" one was actually even better, but it was too big. After I posted the thread, I noticed the page was all stretched out, and your naughty squirrels were the culprit, so I had to downsize them after the fact. Cool picture, though! Love the look of that stream and the green, green grass, too- reminds me of my NC mountain days.)

"Sunrise/Another Day At The Beach", by CROCKofCOINS. (Port of Hueneme Beach, California).

image

"Photo Op: Beach Cut", by CROCKofCOINS.

image

"Plaza Park, Early AM", by CROCKofCOINS.

image

(Not bad for cellphone camera shots, Jerry! Not bad at all. My cellphone ain't got a camera, or some of my pictures would probably be taken that way, too. I wasn't sure whether to use your sunrise shot or the "Hueneme Pier" shot for your three, so I went with the sunrise. But the pier shot was kinda cool. I could do a similar shot under our pier on St. Simons Island, but the tide comes up much closer with ours, so it would only be possible at max low tide!)

"The Mighty Phut Goes Bushwhacking", for phut.

image

(Actually, I took the pictures that day, but since Tim hasn't posted recently, and he was the official "Finder of Cool Stuff" on that short visit here, I will post my photos of his action. Pretend like he was the one who took them.)

"The Mighty Phut Digs", for phut.

image

"The Mighty Phut Scores Spanish Silver", for phut. (A 1799 Mexico City half-real, moments after it was unearthed!)

  • Wow--what a selection of GREAT pics. I had to go with LM's Avenue of Oaks--It could be a postcard--it's that good!!! There were many others that I wanted to vote for, but seeing how it's one vote--I had to go with this one. Great pics by all!!!!!!

Actually, there ARE professional postcards of the Avenue of Oaks for sale, all around here.

It's a popular spot for wedding photos, often with the horse and carriage pulled up into the avenue and all. (Note that St. Simons is misidentified as "Sea Island" in the linked page- a common mistake by nonlocals, since the Avenue Of Oaks is at the "Sea Island" Golf Club, but is actually on St. Simons Island, not Sea Island proper).

I was lucky enough to grab a near-postcard-quality shot that one time (the original was bigger, as I recall).

I had a backyard sunset shot that was a very popular sigline pic of mine, but I forgot where I posted the original.

These Rocky Mountain and desert guys are gonna blow us all away with their scenic shots. Some of John and Brian's river scenics were no slouch, either. And Steve's stormy picture was very cool (and very recent- I remember the storm).

I agree with you- this will be a tough category to choose a single winner in, and will likely be a tough choice every month. That's why I chose to make some limitations to the entries in this one particular category.

    LM,

I agree whole heartedly about the scenic shots in the competition. Bentforks "chugging along the river" was absolutely awesome. His other pics were just as nice, but the train chugging was the best in my opinion. The "haunted farmhouse" by goldrush is another great pic. I love old rustic places that just seem to be all out by themselves. Awesome pic GR!!!!!! "Lake Isabella" by desertrat has got to be a contender. What a pic!!!! "Squirrely Bribery" by demodigger is also a good pic. Anytime wildlife is involved, it's nice to see.

These are some awesome pics----congrats to all.

Everyone of us are already winners with this category. The ones who took the pics have something that they can keep forever and the rest of us get to see your awesome surroundings that you get to live and dig in.

    Thanks for sharing!!!!

Maybe next month I'll post a pic of our sleepy little town here in SW Oklahoma. It won't be too much to look at, but ya'll will be able to see what's here.

<< <i>Bentforks "chugging along the river" was absolutely awesome >>

I think that would've probably been my pick, too, except I owed ASUTodd's "Turkeys" a loyalty vote, since his posting that picture gave me the whole idea. (Not to mention that it's also a really cool picture in its own right).

But I'd have had a hard time choosing, really.

I had to go with LM's Avenue of Oaks that I nominated. It has always been my favorite pic posted by Rob.

Hey, now, my "Avenue Of Oaks" is a good picture (at least in the original, wherever I saved that), but it's gettin' too much lovin'. There are other just-as-worthy or even worthier pictures not gettin' enough votes so far!

I don't really wanna win that much, for the first month.

My photo is gettin' too much love.

It's a great pic and I am proud of it, but it is no better than some of the others here.

Ah, well. That's why we vote by poll, I suppose.

It'll be kind of unexpected and weird if I win the first award in this category, like I did in the US Coin category the first time we did the polls.

I shouldn't have, not with some of the other entries here, but a poll's a poll. Hm.
