Complete US-PHIL Coins for Sale, Circulation Strikes 1903-1945
  • The www.philippinecoins.com site is put up by two friends of mine, so naturally I loves it.

Tom Culhane's site isn't as informative but he does post really, really nice coins from time to time. I've bought from him several times; all good experiences. I've met him, and that also was a good experience.

The eBay coins, gosh, there's a place to go bargain shopping. Time and again, I've gotten incredible deals there because the dealers selling the coins don't know the US Philippine coins. Amongst the bargains ...

1 centavo: the rare 1918-S large S, in MS 63. Sold as an ordinary, small "s" because the dealer didn't know squat, and I picked it up for $300.

1 centavo: the elusive 1908-S, HORNED S, MS66 RED. Dealer advertised it as an ordinary 1908-S, because again he didn't know squat. The 1908-S in 66 RED is an ordinary coin but a condition scarcity so I had to pay "through the nose" for it: $2,100. But the Horned S I got is a pop 1/0 coin worth 6 to 10 times more.

1 peso: the rare 1905-S type 2, MS63. Again, the dealer didn't know the difference between the ordinary, type 1 minted January through November 1905, and and the rare type 2 (minted only in December). So he sold it with no mention of the variety. I bagged that coin for $4,000 which was a stiff price for type 1. But as a type 2, it was pop 2/0, and worth 3 to 4 times as much.

    Yummmmmmm

I'll be going to Manila soon. Are you located there? The owner of the www.philippinecoins.com is, as I mentioned, a friend of mine, and if you'd like to meet with him, I'm sure I could set it up.

Just having fun, and tons of it

Philippines collectors: What do you think of the Red Book's coverage of these series? Do you use it as a reference; check the valuations from year to year; or otherwise use it as a resource?

I don't use the Red Book. I use Krause and Lyman Allen as a reference, but both are pretty out of date, especially for higher grade pieces. Best references are the most recent auction results at Heritage, Ponterio, Goldberg, Stacks, Cookie Jar Collectibles, etc.

  • Gosh, I've found the Red Book an invaluable guide to the US Philippine series. The amount of coverage the Red Book is by itself an invaluable measuring rod. The more the coverage, the greater the acceptance of these coins as US coins.

The prices -- in my experience -- are better and more accurate than Lyman. Still, the most accurate guide, by far, are the auction results, and to the ones you listed, I'd include eBay. These are the largest single source of auction results for certified US-Philippine coins.

yes, include ebay. it is one of the best way to determine the prices of high grade US-Philippine coins and also one of the best source of certfied US-Philippine coins. it is where i bought my most favorite US-Philippine coin the 1904 half centavo graded by PCGS as MS65 Red
