I Think I'm On An Island When It Comes To Barry Bonds

If I'm on an island on this one, then so be it. But I hope someone signs Barry Bonds for the 2008 season. Because for me, it has been and always will be, about entertainment.

    Im right there with ya!
  • I agree that barry's an entertaining player.

I am, however, VERY against steroid usage and have lost all respect for this man.

If he gets signed, I'll watch, if not, no biggie.

Compared to prior years when the Sports Media followed Bonds around like paparazzi hounding Britney Spears or Pricess Diana, this year's Sport Media coverage of Bonds is muted, almost to the point that he is forgotten.

I guess stories about "Bonds has no team interested in his services" are just not very newsworthy.

Yes, I'm not with you on this one, but to each their own.
  • I believe he'll be signing with Attica in time for the playoffs.

I would completely abandon even my beloved Cardinals if they signed Bonds, and I have to believe that there are an ENORMOUS number of people who feel the same way. There may be enough people who would show up to boo him to make up for that, but what team really wants to go an entire season getting booed? The thought that there may be people who would come to the games to actually root for Bonds borders on the grotesque and I refuse to believe that there are enough such people to factor into the equation.

Only a team that is really, really terrible AND has no realistic expectation of drawing crowds of real fans AND decides that a season getting booed is better than a season getting ignored AND doesn't mind employing criminals AND has no respect whatsoever for the game itself will even entertain the idea of signing Bonds. Maybe they can go that last extra mile and pay Bonds to personally spit in the face of every fan who shows up, and maybe every "fan" can spit on a picture of Hank Aaron as they enter the stadium. I suppose that might be entertaining to somebody, too.
This is for you @thisistheshow - Jim Rice was actually a pretty good player.

Looks like Bond's "Hey, I'm the victim here" approach is starting to work.

  • I will always appreciate what he was able to do on the field. To me, one of the best three or four players to ever play the game should continue so long as he is willing. Sad that no team will give him a chance, but it is easy to understand why given the drug culture in this country

It wasn't just the steroids. The guy has acted like a horse's ass his entire career. How can anyone root for him?
  • I am surprised that nobody has signed him...he must be asking for a ton.

Baseball teams are known for signing druggies, wife beaters...and a whole league of steroid users who lie. I dont' see Bonds any different than those guys. If baseball has finally put their foot down and stopped signing these jerks, I would be happy.

But alas, they haven't. They even continue to sign a guy who has admitted to ruining the integrity of the game more than anybody...Gary Sheffield. This guy is a jerk in every sense, a steroid user and liar, and a moron. But more importantly, he has made throwing errors on purpose just so he can get traded. How this guy gets any free pass is a mind boggler.

If they are putting their foot down with Bonds, then do it with everyone! He, as a person, is no worse or better than half the guys in the league.

Mets & Phils both won the same number of playoff games last season, though, Stevey. If you're gonna make the playoffs, at least represent like we did in 2006. No matter, order will be restored in 2008, and Santana will win the Cy Young and the World Series MVP!

Hopefully for your sake the Mets can get through this injury bug thing that is plaguing them! Whats the word on Beltrans knees?

That's OK, Black, I can handle Steve's "barbs". image

Perk, Just hoping Beltran will be ready to fly on Opening Day. All good teams suffer injuries, but he'd be a big hole to fill. Alou, who cares? Beltran? Another story.

bonds will be on the mets this year. alou is to injury prone. they will complimant eachother perfectly. alou will only play like 60 games. bonds will play the other 102. god i hope wilpon has the nads to make this happen.

bonds signs cheap with the mets knowing its his last real shot at a ring. he will come and play and be humble not an a$$.. heck if TO could come to dallas and be a human. bonds can help the mets win the world series! heck ive been waiting since 1986!!

Bonds on the Mets?? I'm afraid I have to agree with Steve on this one, I hope NOT!

But we won't have to worry, cause Bonds won't sign "cheap" with anyone, and Minaya isn't that crazy.

jerry id take him in a new york minute! why not? bc he did roids like 90% of the league did the last 20 years or so. hes a perfect fit for what the mets need right now. we have only 2 -4 guys to trade. which Fmart isnt going anywhere. the tejada kid looks like hes gonna be a great player. then we have 2 pitchers in rustich and kunz. other than that farm is weak.

bonds is perfect signing without having to trade any of those 4. for a journey man player. if not bonds dont be surprised if sammy sosa is signed. he still mashes lefties and thats what the mets really need a righty bat that hits lefties real well.

if not bonds or sosa. youre left with shawn green if you can get him out of retirement.. other then that you have to trade away players from a very depleted farm.

    Kuhlman,

I agree with your logic, just don't like the guy and would have a hard time rooting for him, is all I mean.

Geez - Did most Mets fans ever see a free agent they didn't like? Must be nice when money is no object. Bonds did have decent stats last season, but a guy like him is going to deteriorate rapidly one of these days soon, especially without the juice. Plus he's a distraction in the clubhouse which doesn't mean nearly as much in baseball as it does in football, but it still means something negative. Frankly, it's more logical he would go to the AL as a DH unless he just doesn't want to go to the AL for whatever reason.

Assuming he can't get his case dismissed because of the typo, when does his trial start? I am afraid that besides being a paraiah, he'll be a media circus that will rival the OJ case. Tough for anybody to be part of a team, or contribute, with that going on. I know he got used to a circus with the single season and all-time HR chases, but this will be dramatically different - tougher, more vicious, and on a much grander scale.

Not sure if anybody wants that circus to ruin their team's season for an old man with bad knees (and little incentive to keep juicing - think Giambi the year he couldn't juice because of organ problems).

story starting to get legs with the media now..

At his ESPN.com blog, Buster Olney believes it time for the Mets to discuss signing Barry Bonds following the recent wave of injuries.

    Olney writes:

“Among all of the alternatives the Mets will discuss, the acquisition of Bonds would be the only way the team would acquire a high-impact hitter without gutting a farm system already depleted by the Johan Santana and Brian Schneider trades. Landing Bonds would be a cash-only proposition. You pay and he plays, and hits, at an extraordinarily high level.”

Is that all. I've been waiting since 1979 and we had Bonds.

Mets need to do this. They have to try and win it all this year. Plus, Willie Mays finished his career at Shea, so I could see Barry doing it.

I don't like how the Mets are running their organization now. They're gutting the farm to go after guys like Pedro and Santana. Not good.
But Barry will just be cash. This is a no brainer.

pedro was signed free agency. so was beltran. wright and reyes home grown talent locked up for 5 years. johan did gut the farm but not as bad as i thought it would be. we still have pelfrey and fernando martinez. some good players in low a ball. the tejada kid looks to good to be true right now.

I've been waiting since 1908. And we did it with a guy that only had three fingers.
