  • What a way to ruin a card.. He would have been better off leaving alone and then selling for the charity.

    I am willing to bet the auction will never run full course I see at least 2 Ebay violations that will get it pulled if reported.

    As for the item, it is a true one-of-one (1/1): the only cut-signature card of Communist dictator Fidel Castro included in The Topps Company's 2007 edition of its popular Allen & Ginter brand trading cards. (Please note that this brand primarily features baseball players, and is considered within the hobby to be a baseball-card set.)

    It is VERY IMPORTANT to note that the item has been SIGNIFICANTLY MODIFIED since Topps manufactured it. Here is some background information as to why these modifications were made.

    In recent years, The Topps Company in general has done a very good job of creating 1/1 cut-signature trading cards of various non-athletes. These cards have included politicians (e.g., Ronald Reagan and Jimmy Carter), inventors (e.g., Orville Wright), scientists (e.g., Albert Einstein), and astronauts (e.g., Neil Armstrong). Topps is to be praised for diversifying its product in this manner.

    These and other trading card products have sometimes led to a question being asked on various internet websites dedicated to the sportscard hobby: would Topps (or any other company) ever stoop to create a 1/1 cut-signature card of someone like, for example, Adolf Hitler. Most folks have said that this development would be highly unlikely. In Hitler's specific case, this may be true -- I hope it is true -- for all the obvious reasons. As such, it is clear that there is a line that should not be morally crossed by the company: do not glorify evil people.

    With the production of the Allen & Ginter 2007 Fidel Castro 1/1 cut-signature card, Topps has vaulted over this line. Topps should be ashamed of its glorification of Fidel Castro, one of the biggest mass murderers in the history of the Western hemisphere.

    And make no mistake: this card is an attempt to glorify Castro, as shown (for example) by the oh-so-cute image of Castro used on the card: he's wearing a baseball cap. Ooooh, I guess it's OK to be a Communist dictator so long as you're a baseball fan... NOT.

    Also, why is it that the Allen & Ginter 2007 1/1 cut-signature card of Orville Wright -- along with his brother Wilbur, the inventors of the airplane -- has no photo of Orville, while the same set's 1/1 card of Fidel has this benign photo? Hmmm.

    So, as current sole owner of the Fidel card, I have chosen to exercise my FULL RIGHT to do with this card as a I see fit. What this means in this specific case is that I have improved the card by inscribing several words and phrases indicative of the true legacy of Fidel Castro using permanent markers of various colors, as shown in the two photos which accompany this eBay listing.

    These inscriptions include the following:

    On the front of the card:
    * Communist
    * El Manbu concentration camp
    * Free Presidential Medal of Freedom winner Oscar Biscet!

    On the back of the card:
    * In the 1960's, imprisoned approx. 30,000 political opponents.
    * author of the Camilo-Cienfuegos forced labor plan
    * violator of peaceful journalists' free-speech rights

    The item also features other meaningful physical modifications:

    * To represent the enormous damage that Fidel has caused to Cuba and to the cause of individual rights, the four corners of the card have been permanently damaged by whacking them against a rather hard table several times.

    * To represent the quite literal physical damage done to all too many political prisoners over the years -- executions without trials, torturing of innocents, etc. -- the cards' four sides have been sliced by a knife over and over again.

    Fidel may have fooled some people -- for example, some mass media hacks, Hollywood twits, and ivory-tower type university dopes -- but he has not fooled me.

    Hopefully, he has not fooled you, either!!!

    There is NO shipping charge for this item. The item will be shipped to you within one week of confirmation of your contribution to the Center for a Free Cuba.

    Also VERY IMPORTANT: this listing in NO WAY -- directly or indirectly -- promotes or glorifies hatred, violence, racial or religious intolerance, or promotes organizations with such views. In fact, this listing is intended to highlight that it is profoundly moral to fight against the actions of dictators who promote things such as hatred (for example, hatred of capitalists and homosexuals) and religious intolerance.

    To join the fight for freedom, bid on this item!

    I thank you for supporting the cause of individual rights!!!
  • Didn't this card sell for $5,000 or something about two months ago or so, when the card wasen't yet written on?

    "........There is a well-known baseball trivia question that makes its way around most press boxes involving Fidel Castro as a 21 year-old pitching prospect for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Seems two corpulent scouts, hired by the parent club, went to Havana to watch the diminutive lefty break nasty curves and dip sinkers in and around the aggressive Latin competition, but were somewhat lukewarm about his speed. “The kid Castro has some command of breaking pitches (stop),” the report told the front office the next morning via Western Union. “Has nothing on the fast ball (stop) Double AA talent at best (stop).”

    The Pirates never did have the patience to develop short Cuban kids with little pop on the cheese, so a dejected Fidel attended law school, went to prison, and disappeared into the Cuban socialist underground. Those were the days when his family and friends were subsisting on a steady diet of dung beetles and palm leaves chased by rotten disease-ridden water, while the mob ran numbers for a dictatorship backed by the muscle of Harry Truman’s United States. .........."

    They put a picture of Fidel on the card because he is a known baseball fanatic, played himself, and there are tons of pictures of him doing so...not a conspiracy.

    I actually agree with the guy's sentiments, although he's picking a relatively stupid soapbox to stand on. If this were the 60s or 70s, people would be protesting Topps and ebay after seeing the card up for auction. This is the equivalent of Topps inserting a hussein or bin laden auto card in their packs 20 years from now. I agree that it's a poor choice of a chase card, but it's not really a battle I'd be willing to fight.

    No doubt that FC is a bad guy.

    As a historical figure - with BB links - it is not out of line
    for TOPPS to publish the card.

    NOW that the card has been ruined, its market-value is VERY questionable.

  • The writing should have been done by real victims of Castro, otherwise it's just ramblings of a guy who can afford something expensive

    JFK planned to kill Castro, but Casto got him first. How about a dual auto of them next year?

    I agree with Lee on this one - Castro is a commie, thug who had a pivotal role in bringing the western hemisphere to the brink of destruction. Thanks to God & soldiers like Rube we live in a free country where companies like Topps can issue cards of commie dictator thugs and people like the seller can do what they want with their personal property. I'm getting off of the soap box now...
