A seller's plee or begging?

Was browsing thru the games category and I always
avoid sellers that charge $6.50 - $8.00 to ship one game. These
are the ones that are powersellers with 50,000+ FB and generally
in the low 90% or worse.
I sell games here and there and charge $3.50. e.g. One PS2 game
or PSP fits perfectly into an 8 X 10 bubble mailer and cost about $2.50 to ship, so how would you respond to something like this:

When you do decide to leave feedback for us we kindly ask that you leave 5 STARS on each "detailed seller rating". It is very important to us. :-) Our eBay business highly depends on these 5 star ratings in each area.

LOL, kiss my a**

When you rate our shipping and handling we ask that you please consider your "total price" paid, and not just the shipping and handling fees. Combined eBay and PayPal fees take approximately $5.00 for each item we sell on eBay. This adds a huge cost for us to sell an item on eBay. So, we kindly ask for you to consider this when rating us in the shipping and handling section of the detailed seller ratings. Your total price paid is a great value and we hope you will consider this when leaving those ratings because our profits on eBay are already very thin to begin with.

He charges $7.99 shipping for 1st game, and $6.99 for each additional game...what a saint!

image I'm sorry that paypal and ebay charges a fee for using their services. That is not my concern. I also think that by stating this in their description that these guys are setting themselves up for major hits of destruction in May?

Thoughts?

I understand that, so charging ridiculous s/h rates will get them there?
  • Isn't it against ebay or paypal terms (or both) to offset their fees with higher shipping costs? I know many people do it, but it's pretty lame to admit it in your auctions.

I would ignore them and not bother with feedback.

    Give them what they deserve.
One star for 'Shipping and handling charges'. I've started doing that a lot.

If a seller makes a buck or two on shipping that's okay,
I still give them 5 stars, but 3 or 4 dollars markup earns them the dreaded one star from me. image

Which is why I don't buy video games on eBay.

I'm sorta, kinda in the market to add to my video game collection as I have been looking at buying a Nintendo GameCube (I know it's garbage but I don't have one) and had been looking at the shipping charges and decided to take a look at a site like EBgames and they can ship the system USA 2-Day $6.99 or USA Value $2.99 5-10 Business Days.

I like those prices a bit better.

But if they overcharge for S&H and people ding them for the high charge, they then lose 15% discount. So I think EBay has the "S&H overchargers" by the short hairs. If they want to keep at least a 4.9 rating, they will have to drop their shipping fees.

I would leave 1 star for shipping.

  • I think if people don't like the shipping charges than they should buy that item, because I don't belive in leaving somebody a 1 star because you didn't like their shipping charges. If you don't like it and would like a discount just contact the seller and ask for one, and when they say no then don't bid/buy.

I think ebay needs more nice buyers!!!!!!!! image

But how do you know the quality of the shipping before it is shipped?. If it was hand delivered within six hours for $7.99 that could be an outstanding deal. If you buy something that takes over a week and arrives in a standard sized envelope, anything over $0.42 may start to become excessive

  • As both a buyer and a seller, I think if you dont like the s/h price, don't bid. You should know the s/h before you bid, so if you are not happy to with the s/h, don't bid.... it's that simple.

I have only given less than 5 stars once, and that was because the s/h was not posted.

Maintaining a 4.9 rating is next to impossible. Some dealers have actually raised shipping fees. I would guess that the increase in shipping makes up for the 15% break they can't get anyway.
I also feel that if shipping charges are listed in the auction and I could not rate those charges above a 2 I would not bid. At a rating of 3 it would have to be a great deal.

Actually received this email from a buyer when I sent a follow-up reminder to leave feedback:
Yea i got the card. if i leave feedback its negative cuz you overcharged like $4 on shiping. its scumbags like you that pissed me off.

Mind you, this person bought a graded card for $150.00. As I CLEARLY state in my auctions, s/h is $5.00 for USPS 1st Class Priority Mail with Delivery Confirmation. I put all cards in a graded card bag, then a size "0" padded envelope, then the envelope and invoice wrapped in bubble wrap and then inside a Priority Mail box. Materials and shipping exceed $5.00. In this case, I also added insurance.

My response was simple, I stated: "You paid $5.00 for shipping and received nearly $7.50 in shipping cost as I also included insurance at MY expense! I'm not sure where you learned math, but that's a $2.50 loss for me and not the $4.00 profit that you suggest. Feel free to leave a negative if you like. I hope that you enjoy the card as it will be the last one that I will sell to you!"

It's been nearly 2 months and I haven't seen a negative from him. Perhaps he mistook my card for someone else?

Anyway, when you provide quality shipping and don't make any profit, I don't think you should suffer with a 2 or 4 rating. eBay really needs to address the standards by which buyers can review sellers in shipping time and fees.

There have been many good points made.
Obviously the #1 point is if you don't like the shipping, then don't bid; which I don't. I was presenting a scenario with excessive shipping and the seller having the audacity to ask for 5 star fb on all categories which is laughable. Again, if it was shipped in some special way then I may consider it for the price being asked. I've bought plenty of games and they're always shipped 1st class in a bubble mailer with DC. It's under $3.00 total. I sell them as well, and that's how I ship them as well.

As in otwcards' example, I would have no problem leaving 5 stars for that category. Most of my transactions as a buyer, I leave 4 or 5 stars on shipping. As brick said, it's impossible to get 4.9 on all categories. You're going to have to be a exceptional seller. You can still do everything right, but you'll always have that psycho out there that no one can please.

Part of the problem is that eBay identifies 3 and 4 ratings as acceptable, but in the long run, such ratings are not acceptable as far as eBay's "discount" is concerned. I think eBay is just as misleading with this rating system as the buyers are in expecting more than they are entitled to in many cases.

I agree why would you even ask for feedback. 9 times out of 10 it can open a can of worms that would not have been opened in the first place. Like the buyer you mentioned would not have said anything they would have simply moved on.

Its not against Ebay rules to add Ebay fees and Paypal fees into your S/H in fact if you can do it and still charge a reasonable fee its the only way to go. On things like cards ungraded cards under 25.00 if you charge 3.00 S/H the 1.00 or so left covers a good chunk of the fees.

As a buyer I always include the shipping into my bid. I have paid as much as 10.00 to ship a single card, but due to the high S/H I paid about 30 dollars less than what the card normally sells for and was able to immediatly flip it on Ebay for a nice profit.

Why would I send a reminder for feedback? Why would one send a reminder for payment? Why would one send any sort of follow-up to anything? Customer service. Even though I know that the item arrived, I want CLOSURE! Call me anal-retentive, that's fine, but I bust my backside to make every transaction right and if there's a loose end, I want to know what it will take to close it.

Leiascards: Please show me where eBay says it is alright to add EXTRA to cover your eBay and PayPal fees. In fact, PayPal specifically states that you CANNOT charge extra to receive or recover fees associated with their service.

If someone wishes to charge $3.00 for a white envelope and a stamp, then so be it. That's the type of person that gets a 2 star rating.

I accept my reprimand and return the Dunce cap to my dome and resume my position in the corner . . .
  • In fact, PayPal specifically states that you CANNOT charge extra to receive or recover fees associated with their service.

You are confusing covering your fees to adding a SURCHARGE. I charge 3.00 shipping of a single card in a padded mailer. It costs me about 1.50 to1.75 to ship this TOTAL. A bubble mailer that is kept less than 3/4 of an inch thick ships for less than 1.00. I buy mailers in bulk for about 10 cents each. The remainder goes to cover fees.

What you cannot do is say in your listings that if a buyer pays with Paypal you cannot add a fee for doing so as this is illegal in most states. You can HOWEVER say if they pay with a Money Order you will deduct 1.00 from shipping or whatever.

What you just typed, and the attitude behind it, isn't customer service. It's a lack of emotional maturity. When you run across a customer with a similar lack of emotional maturity, you will get the situation that prompted this thread.

Not every buyer wants to leave feedback, for various reasons. Bringing him under an element of compulsion to do so, via the reminder, is bad customer service. As long as you get paid and there aren't any problems, it was a good transaction.
