Athletes and politics - Kevin Johnson for Mayor!

With Kevin Johnson announcing that he is running for mayor of Sacramento it reminds me of many other athletes who have gone into politics. Many with success and some with not. I believe Steve Sax ran for state legislature and lost. Anybody have good athletes in politics stories? I have posted a story and photo of KJ on my blog if you are interested. BLOG LINK

Steve Largent, Jim Bunning, Jack Kemp are a few pro-sports stars turned politicians I can think of off the top of my head.

What will be the impact regarding the market for his sports cards and memorabilia?
I collect Vintage Cards, Commemorative Sets, and way too many vintage and modern player collections in Baseball (180 players), Football (175 players), and Basketball (87 players). Also have a Dallas Cowboy team collection.

Didn't Charles Barkley at one time ran for some office somewhere?

If including wrestlers, former WWF champion Bob Backlund and Rick Flair (believe it or not) ran for office in their respective home towns at one point.

Not yet but has indicated he will eventually run for something in Alabama.

Bill Bradley was the one I was think of, but couldn't put a name to a face. If extending into college sports, George Bush Sr. played for Yale I believe.

Not counting people already mentioned elsewhere in this thread:

Bill Kenney (Chiefs QB) became a State Senator in MO and ran for statewide office
Tom McMillen (Bullets forward) spent several terms in the House of Representatives
"Big Daddy" Don Garlits (drag racer) ran for Congress during the 1990s in central FL
Reggie Williams (Bengals LB) became a city councilman in Cincinnati
Paul Gonzales (Olympic gold medalist in boxing) ran for L.A. city council in 2003
Byron "Whizzer" White (college football star and NFL player) spent over 30 years on the U.S. Supreme Court
Ben Nighthorse Campbell (Olympic gold medalist in judo) served as a member of the U.S. House and Senate from CO for almost 20 years
Rob Scribner (L.A. Rams RB) ran for Congress about 20 years ago in the L.A. area

Steve Sax opened a campaign committee for State Assembly in the Sacramento, CA area but did not follow through with the race after copies of his divorce papers became a local media story (his wife accused him of domestic violence).
