eye dominance and loupes

When you bring a loupe close to your face for viewing a coin, do you prefer using your dominant or non-dominant eye?
Shooting billiards, a rifle or handgun, a telescope and photography also depend upon eye dominance. So a related question:
When you take aim with a rifle, both eyes open or one eye open?
How about when using a loupe?

Edit: Your weaker eye is not necessarily your non-dominant eye. With both eyes open, point to a distant object. Then close each eye and the dominant eye will be the one that points to the object you selected. It has nothing to do with vision acuity (20/20 or 20/50) or with handedness (Left or right parity).

  • I'm nearsighted in my left eye, so I always use my right (dominant) eye when looking through a loupe.

It depends on the loupe for me. My 16x I use it close to my eye and with my dominant one.
With my 10x I use it alittle farther from my eye and I use both eyes.

For a rifle with a scope, its my dominant eye. For pool both eyes. For a handgun both eyes aswell.

With my coin scope its both eyes too.

I'm left eye dominant, which I use for a loupe.

Pistol, I use my left eye when target shooting - tactical range usually both open.
M-16 or other non-scoped rifle and shotgun, I keep both open.
M203, M60, 50-cal, or other big guns were usually both open.
    Scope/Sniper rifle, left eye.
Pretty sure shooting pool, I don't close one, but will have to check next time I'm playing.

I am right eye dominant, but left handed. Always created a little difficulty with things like archery. have to shoot at the phantom target.

I use my right eye with a loupe, both eyes open, just checked.

I use my left eye, which is a good thing since I had plastic shards shot into my right eye one afternoon in science class my freshman year of high school.

I use my Dominant Eye,,,but don't tell the other one (he might get jealous)

For a loupe I will use either eye, no preference.

For photography, I will also switch, but I notice that I have a significantly different artistic view between left and right. My right eye tends to see more details of the picture while the right eye tends to be more overall semmetry or artistic beauty.

It's quite likely that one eye versus the other actually pick up coins differently, but I've yet to discern that yet.

I use my right eye with left eye closed using loupe. I had never given any thought to which eye was the dominant one. Just checked after you mentioned how to test. I'm right eye dominant. It was always just a preference because my right hand hold the loupe much more steady than my left hand. Which I guess just makes the coin in my shakier of the two hands. You can tell I havent given this a lot of thought. image

I'm apparently left-eye dominant, but I always use my right-eye to look at coins through a loupe.

Because I'm right handed, and always hold the loupe in my right hand, it makes more sense to stick it under my right-eye than cross it in front of my face to look through it with my left.

Oddly, my dominant eye is also the one with the least retinopathy - it was dominant before the condition developed.

I only use a loup with my dominant eye, same with a scope. Open sights both eyes are open, epecially so bird hunting with a shotgun.

I always use my dominant eye with the loupe. I consciously try using my right eye instead, but I just feel more confident looking at coins through a loupe with my left eye. Interesting question image

I'm sure it's up to each individual grader to determine which eye they are most comfortable with.

...Usually dominant eye, both eyes open.

This improves acuracy and speed while reducing eye strain. It's easy to learn.

Believe it or not, most coins at the major TPG companies are graded without any magnification.
