1855P Liberty Half Eagle - guess the grade if you wish. thoughts welcome
I am very pleased with this coin. It has a nice patina. Luster is
very visible in the normal areas for this grade range when turning
the coin in your hand.
The small spot by the date does not bother me in the least. If only I
could find more like it!
Thoughts are welcome, positive or negative. Grade guesses are always fun to read.
Just wanted to share my new coin that I bought recently. As usual
lately, i just snap some quick pictures without really trying at night
with only the normal room lighting. Sorry about the quality. The plastic
is also a bit roughed up above liberty's hair.

Awesome color and one I would welcome in my set anytime.
<< <i>45, not sure what the strike is supposed to be like. >>
I think it is usually a week strike for the date which makes grading difficult.

is this how grades are expressed now? it used to be, "raw, 55, slabbed 50 or 53"
now they're all certified, and it's "55 holder, or 53 with a green sticker, or 50 with a gold sticker"
anyway, Baley's Grade from the pics is AU-54

pcgs decided to grade it AU50 and i can live with that.
i was excited to see it on ebay and hunted it down with a snipe.
the people who guessed xf45 i can totally agree with based on the
pics. get the coin in hand and rotate it a few times and you would
quickly change your mind. the reverse shot captures the luster better
then the obv.. but the obv has it also.
thanks all for your comments. i hope i can locate more coins like
this one in the future.

i can understand your reply based on the pics.
but to be honest, the label means very little to me. i would have bought
it if it said xf40, xf45, au50, or au53.
i just like the look of this type of gold.

I fully understand that it is a choice coin for whatever grade it really is. I just feel that grading standards for gold coins have gotten very lax.
[Edited] I guess I was a bit late

I can easily say that the tpg across the street is lax while pcgs less so. Overall i can easily agree that grade inflation has
taken place in the realm of lib half eagles. Some of the slop that makes it into holders is simply shocking let alone
a bump from xf45 to au50!
I knew by my pics that this coin would be graded xf45 from them. When you cannot see the ring of luster
around the ovb or other areas that are protected.. a grade guess of xf45 is to be expected.
maybe pcgs gave the coin a slight bump to being a bit more original then others? i have no clue what
goes through their minds when graders are doing their thing.
i have noticed many bidders forgetting about what the label states and they bid accordingly. this is
the way it should be in my mind! On ebay i paid strong xf45 money for it but not even close to AU53-55
money. This basically tells me others who were trying for it, based on the pics, agree with your sentiments!
I guess in the end, i do not mind a bit of liberal grading versus terribly cleaned/hairlined gold being slabbed.
That is the real problem as i see it today. grade inflation is here to stay unless a new tpg springs up to bring
back older standards and people start to bid according to their grading abilities instead of a label.
thanks for sharing your opinion 291fifth and i can easily see this coin sent back for grading and getting a 45.
or a 50. or a 45. or a 50 ;-) maybe we need a XF48 and be done with it!
