Bought my First Peace Dollar How'd I do?

So I finally broke down and bought my first peace dollar, technically the first coin I've ever bought by itself. In the past I'd only ever bought bulk bags of brown wheats. I know as a very green collector I should have bought certified but I collect in albums so it kinda seemed a waste to buy a slab to have to break it apart and stuff. I paid 30 for it which I'm thinking was high since it was in a ms64 2x2 which I know doesn't mean a thing but I liked the look of the coin. Here are some pics that make it really look funny but maybe you guys can give an opinion none the less.

  • I didn't know peace dollars came in gold. image The reverse looks pretty nice from the picture, but it's kind of hard to tell about the obverse. I have a hard time grading these anyway.....
imageQuid pro quo. Yes or no?
  • Yeah my apartment has some funny lights in the bathroom and everywhere else in my house is either fluorescent and dim or those super environmentally efficient light bulbs my wife bought for every lamp in the house which you can barely read with.
  • IMO, you did good - seems like a nice strike - nice detail in hair - love the color - does it have a golden glow to it or just the lighting??
currently putting together a EF/AU/BU 18th & 19th Century Type Set; and CC Morgan Set

  • No just the lighting but its got some light toning that kinda caused it to look like that and my nikon's flash just made the whole coin white. I was mainly wanting to find out if it was an uncirculated coin or not, I know grade is subjective.
  • Actually looks like a decent coin--definitely BU, and MS64 is possible if the obverse is nice (I can't see it too well).

Even as a greenhorn you don't necessarily have to buy certified if you're staying under the $100 range.

Can't really grade from that photo but it looks to have a fair amount of luster on the reverse.

Given the current price of silver I think you did pretty good. This will be a good album coin.

As far as the coloring, look at your camera manual, you need to set the white balance. This can be done with a simple piece of white printer paper.
  • image I think you did great! That will be a very nice album coin.

  • The obverse appears to have a few hits and marks in the field. The reverse looks pretty good. Average strike. Its hard to to tell but I would grade it MS62 or MS63. You could have done worse.

With the obvious disadvantage of the picture, I can say this... the strike appears reasonably good and there certainly seems to luster... no idea of the grade from that picture. Cheers, RickO

I do not believe you paid too much, per se. Coins are funny. You might snoop around eBay for weeks and find one for less in better condition, but when a guy or gal wants to collect a coin and gets that "itch" to pull the trigger, it takes great discipline to back away and wait for something better. That's the world of the collector in us.

Clearly looks mint state, 62-64 range. Depends much on how serious the marks in the obv left field are, and those hits on the eagle's leg. $30 is not unreasonable. (You can also get PCGS MS63s for near the same money as a safer bet).

Give Blood (Red Bags) & Platelets (Yellow Bags)!

Agreed, nice strike. Very good pick up. I think you did well for the money
Positive BST transactions with: too many names to list! 36 at last count.
  • Very nice pick up looks like a solid 64 to me
