A fine question. I thought 2008 would be the last year of the Sac as we know it but I don't rightly know for sure.
  • The last I read the mint had sent congress a request to do a special fix for the issue, but right now, the mint says it does not have the legal right to mint them for this year.

... and for 2009 they do the edge lettering bit like the presidential dollars. Bob

Looks that way, the mint would be in violation of US law if they made any now. Maybe they will get the legislation through?

What am I going to use to fill the hole in my heart?
  • Not so, at least according to the laws so far.

If I read the act correctly, (1997 Coin act) they will still make a SAC dollar. They are not going away. HOWEVER, they will have a reverse that will reflecft some development in Indian Culture. I kind of like the design of the SAC, its not my favorite, but its OK. I think it grows on you.

There is a Idian Coin act out there which I have read just a bit of, not all, looks like 2009 will be new reverses for the SAC. SO, thats why I have been asking about 2009 so freaking much.

    New pennies.
    New SAC
    New Pres dollars
    New quarters.

Its a busy year for certain.

With all that the mint has to do this year it would not surprise me if they let it go this year. It might be too late for Congress to pass anything in a meaningful time line for the mint to work with.

OR, they do it and make mistakes which leads to variety galore.

IMO, thats what happened with the pres dollars. They were doing the state quarters and then the pres dollars and tada....errors.
  • Didn't they briefly have rolls and bags available on the website? This was the same time the internet ordering was down. I know because I saw it and it said available on such and such a date which had already passed.

I don't know if this means they actually had made some already. Wouldn't that be too cool if they made some and didn't release them and a couple snuck out the front door or bathroom window or lunch pail.

It'd be the 33 double eagle and 64 Peace all over again.

I don't think the NA reverses on the sac begin until 2009. Will 2008 be a hiatus? I was hoping for at least one more year with the eagle reverse.

correct NA reverse begins 2009, with a different reverse every year. I also thought we'd get another year of the existing eagle reverse.

I read in CW ( 2/18/08 pg. 5) that unless the Mint gets congressional approval to a "technical amendment" for the Mint to get the necessary authorization, it won't be able to strike 2008 Sacagawea dollars either for circulation (rolls, etc.) or for collectors, meaning proof and mint sets. It appears wording in the Native American $1 coin act and the presidential dollar laws somehow have left poor Sacagawea out in the cold for 2008.

i don't think there will be a 2008 sac buck, look for 2009 with all the new reverses and edge lettering examples being the only choices.

A truly melancholy turn of events. I can only hope that the next series of disposable designs are of greater artistic merit than those in which we are currently awash.

for the life of me i'll never understand why the hell they want to lose that beautiful eagle reverse!!!

I share your consternation. It is such a fabulous design, especially given the limitations of space and required text. It's brilliant.

they should keep the original sac as is. what's wrong with making the other types AND the original? as far as the edge lettering i think that is another blunder like the prez bucks.image

seems a shame to put a 'break' in a series... I hope the Mint somehow does get to produce the 2008. It is the nicest circulation coin we have. Cheers, RickO

I bet the ad you saw was for pre-orders. They tend to do that a lot. Nothing has been minted this year.

The mint is just reading the laws the way they want to. 2008 Sackies could be minted under the same laws that all the 2001 thru 2007 coins were minted. This is just like the mint not producing the 1/3 total 2007 mintage Sackies.
