U.S. Mint: missed opportunities...

please list your thoughts. what has the Mint not done, in terms of a missed design on our coinage? I felt a real miss when the Schlag design of Monticello was overlooked in the Jefferson Nickel overhaul. Others?

  • They should have made a matte proof or a reverse proof for the anniversary of Lincoln. I also think they missed it on the nickel. That original design was amazing.

I gotta say though, there alot of great ones they nailed.

The most impactive (to numismatists and America) is the lack of art on our coinage. You cannot design by committee - especially when that committee is full of bureaucrats and self centered, egoists. Art needs to be done by an artist... the design delegated. Of course, someone will have the right of approval (to avoid the outrageous).. but it must be limited. Cheers, RickO

  • I prefer the Carr design to the Sacagacagawea.
  • Production ..production..production.That's what the mint knows. The mint really has not produced a truly artistic desig for circulation because of production requirements. The amount of coins the mint churns out per minute or hour per day is staggering. To achieve these levels they have to rely on a simple designs ...anything else would be catastrophic to either production or dies.

They still have the opportunity to move all modern commems to high relief and .999(99) image

Some HR commems are on the way so they should be on board with this one soon.

It was a mistake to end the Sac. They also should have kept the 2005 obverse of the nickel. It's far better then the one launched in 2006.

I understand there were technical difficulties with the flying eagle cent but I have always liked that design. I wish it had run longer or been used on another circulating denomination.

DITTO, no more presidents on our coinage. Lets see some real art. Weren't the current coins such as Lincoln and Washington supposed to be a short lived Commem?

They really missed out by not issuing a Denver Mint Centennial coin or medal in 2006. But that left the door open for me to do one.
Note, however, that Congress is the only autority that can authorize such an issue - so it is the fault of Congress that none were made.

I also think an opportunity has been missed because they could have issued $5 and $10 coins, especially in place of Ken halves and Prez dollars that are never used.

I'd like to see higher denomination coins as well but their introduction would have to coincide with the end of the paper bills they would be replacing. Such a beautiful dream...

For this to work they would have to get rid of the paper money under $20. I would love this but most people would cry foul.
  • Sacagacagawea

    I think it's spelled Sacagacagacagawea
