1963 silver peso.

I won a 63 peso on the bay last night. The description says silver but I can't find info on it anywhere. I have seen the uncirculated set and it has a silver peso included.

Any bullion guys have info on this coin? I only paid 1.25 for it so no loss either way. I was trying to pick up a couple of Bullion coins and this was from the same seller so I placed a bid on it. I have zero knowledge on foreign money so any help would be appreciated....

The Mexican Pesos of 1957-67 were only .100 fine silver. Actual silver weight was .0514 troy oz. At a silver price of $18.00 per ounce the bullion value of your coin would be about 93 cents US. The 14th Edition of "Modern World Coins 1850-1964," which was just published, lists that peso at $1.50 in uncirculated condition.

I'm told not to buy these for silver because they tend
to be light and the silver is very difficult to recover. If
it's unc you did very well since these aren't all that com-
mon unc. It would be worth a couple bucks at least.

If you are looking for bullion coins in general, I would suggest the BST board here.

I don't really consider low-fineness coins like 1963 Mexican Pesos true bullion - kind of like circulated war nicks - not a great way to maintain liquidity.
  • Thanks for the help guys. It was a combined auction so the shipping was the same either way. I guess I will throw it in the junk jar and go on.

I have made a few purchases on the BST board and have been very pleased. I purchased 3 ASE's that were the painted one's a few months ago. My wife said they were a waste of money because no one will pay melt for them. I paid 15 dollars and showed her what 30 seconds in acetone will do. They came out spotless without a single mark on them. image

I just smiled as she walked away grumbling..I did keep the one that had Lady Liberty painted red white and blue. I kinda like that one.

Thanks again for the help. A cheap lesson learned..
