I have decided to sell my collection of dimes. (Up-dated)

StoogeStooge Posts: 4,668 ✭✭✭✭✭
After langushing back and forth for several months, I've decided that it would be in my best interest to sell off my entire set of dimes. You can view the set here:

1796-Date Dimes

There are many reasons for this. My health is fine so thats not the reason and I would like to say really that collecting the Roosies has been an incredible journey. All of the Roosie collectors have been great and some have turned out to be fantastic friends.

I'm not sure what I will be doing, but for now the set is offered as 1 entire lot. I will entertain serious offers through PM's for right now. If it does not sell I will re-examine my choices and may decide to offer the coins individually on the BST forum.

Now the kicker is, that I am still going back and forth because I love my dimes, so all I can say that today, they are for sale.

2/24/08,

I have had an enormous amt. of support from alot of Guys and I have changed my mind regarding selling off all of my dimes. I will be keeping just the Roosies for now, as all of my other dimes are at this time replacable if I decide to follow that path.

I have a deal in the works for my Bust stuff right now, but I'm willing to hear offers for the other non-Roosie stuff, until I can get a list together on the BST forum.

Thanks for everyone's support, including Dimeman.

Later, Paul.

I just listed all of my non-Roosie Dimes on the BST forum. Here is a link:

WOW, at first I thought this would be a joke. Whenever I think of Roosies I think of "Stooge".

I can't believe you are selling. I am very sorry to see you go.

Good luck in selling your amazing, wonderful, and unique set of coins!!

Paul - I have been fighting this same decision for the last year or so, probably for the same reason as you. You can't see how you can ever finish the set with several of the coins going nuts like the 74-cc and the 16-d.

    DON'T DO IT!

I sold my 74-cc for 2K now it will take 10-12K to replace it and my 16-D I sold for 9K (paid 3500) will cost 20-24k to replace. These replacement prices are rising as I type.

My point is, I had the whole set and sold off a bunch and wish I HADN'T!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Unless you need the money just hold them.......once you sell them.........they are gone!

Paul-I think we have all been there one time or another.

I am going to have to agree with Jon here. I have sold many collections in the past for all
kinds of reasons and such. Those coins that are gone are even harder and pricey to get now.

    Tomorrow is another day.

  • Greed is good ... think of all you could do with the profits.

Of course you don't necessarily have to sell all of your dime collection ... just narrow the focus a bit and use the profits to upgrade what you decide to keep.

  • We see it more and more every day...people build very nice sets here in the registry...but simply get bored with them and feel the need to take on another challenge. That's exactly what happened to me and I have absolutely no regrets about selling (of course my lincoln set does not even come close to Stooge's dime set). In my case, I went from slabbed lincolns back to raw FE's, IHC and lincolns in Danscos and I'm having more fun then ever before! I was totally in love with my set...but I wasn't really getting anything out of them when I hit a certain point.

Anyone else feel the same way?

Stooge, if you do decide to sell, I STRONGLY recommend selling them individually...you will end up with more $$$ in the long run. Course, a set like yours would more likely to be bought whole too...I did not have that luxury. Best of luck with whatever you decide to do. image

Greed has nothing to do with it.

Keep them or else you will regret it.imageimage
  • Paul,
I know how you feel, I sold about 300 extra coins with Superior at year end. I retired many of my registry mint set to put together another 400+ that are off to Superior next week. I am trying to narrow my collection and will use some of the $$$ to upgrade. I plan on keeping most of the keys, the high end coins and some special mint sets but have started moving some of the dime collection. I have enjoyed putting the clad set together, not sure what to do with it at this time.
    Good luck with your sale.

    Paul,
I have sold off most of my dimes to narrow my focus, to early dimes. I still love the whole dime community and when you told me you were selling it came as a shock. I did not want to post it in case you changed your mind. I agree with Nick you are Mister Roosevelt!! I think you will do much better if you break up the set, if you are truely selling. I should warn you, it's a tough selling time as you know I just sold off most of my Roosevelts. Good luck either way.

PS Nick was a big help!!!!

I think this serves to underscore the fact that there are a few collectors out there who reach the top and still are aggressively pursuing top coins out there. My hat is off to them for the drive and stamina to stay focused.

Several years ago, I finished out my dime set MS/PR, and then I was bored also, so I sold them. I don't regret selling, and I am still enjoying the hobby in other areas. I have long since finished my Proof Lincoln Set, but I still enjoy them and looking for upgrades, even though it is very hard to improve it at the moment ( I only have Stewart & Gerry in front of me right now). I really have a glass ceiling since I probably can't upgrade from currently graded coins unless Stewart sells me something, but I am still fishing through other coins out there to look for coins that improve my set. Even though they are few and far between, it is very rewarding when I find a coin and I am able to improve my set.

Stooge we talked dimes a lot when I was active in the dime market. If you decide to sell, make sure to sell them all and don't look back relative to the Registry. Just close that chapter and find a new way to collect that is rewarding to you and you alone. You are not going to get out of set what you have in it. That's ok, because hopefully this is a hobby and not an investment.

If you decide not to sell, find other ways to enjoy dimes in between upgrades/additions. Shelve the set and focus on something else. For a while I just picked up very nice raw Lincolns 34-date and filled an album. I really had a lot of fun with it, and truthfully most of my raw coins are as nice as the slabbed set. That set is complete with the exception of a nice 1934p which I am still looking for. Maybe I will do another raw one? Maybe a raw set of 09-33 in MS Red-Brown or Brown? I also search for varieties during down times. I have rolls of proof Lincolns. There are many ways to further your collection that are not registry related.

Either direction can be a "win" for you in my opinion.

    DMWJR,

Thank so very much for what you said, as it means alot. I will use the opinions and support of many of the Guys on this forum to the best of my capacity. For one, I believe that the White Fang collection of proof and Mint state Roosies were equally the finest sets of their time when listed as current and 100%. Your proofs were the first to have a complete run of PR70DCAM's from 1973-Date. Very impressive!

You are also very true when most of the focus is lost when there is nothing to add, and your set just sits there. You feel like selling and starting something else. Its horrible.

    Stooge:

Your MS-67FB mercury dimes were quite nice and will now accompany their famous sisters from the Casio and Joshua collections and other equally famous collections. They may be gone from your collection but they are not forgotten.

They have a good new home and while they were not the expensive mercury dimes they sit like peas in a pod with their sisters.

You may visit them at any time!

Oreville, Thank you very much for the kind words! From time to time, I will admit that I chase slabs, because in this game of "Registry" you have to to compete, but I really try hard to have top tier coins (PQ as they say) for the grade.
