I agree--PSA should stop Don from competing. He is keeping me out of first place in three of the Megasets and is ahead of me in probably 30-40 vintage baseball sets alone. I am just glad he stays out of football(where all I have to worry about is MOSH, Fuzz and the dangerous Shouldabeena), basketball, hockey and non-sports.
I was thinking of picking up the two 38 Goudey Fellers in psa 8 but this would drop our poster to fourth and who knows what his reaction would be then.
Feel confident in saying Don is not a Bob Feller collector. He just collects the entire sets in as high grade as he can.
Don has the best collection on the registry and one of the best in the hobby.
Money doesn't buy happiness in this world. We are collectors of cards to get away from the pressures of every day life. Work, bills, family and health are what give us stress and our hobby is suppose to take us away to a better place. Enjoy what you collect, not matter what grade someone else says it is. The registry should be a place just to inventory your cards. Your collection is better than 99.9% of the entire world population's. You are already a winner. Enjoy. Joe

In some case having the top registered set does not mean it is the best but, I would bet that Spence's cards are "better" than yours. You could always sell all your cards that are lower than PSA 8 and parlay them into one or two more nines and move forward. Other options include sell crack , sell a kidney, spend the kids college fund, get a second mortgage, turn tricks, rob banks, run con games or buy an oil company. This may give you an edge in the competition. Yet another option would be to just enjoy the cards you have.
Hi , I've just joined the forums , PSA etc . I mainly collect cigarette cards issued in the UK but due to an interest in the Topps Civil War News set have ended up here , fair play it's not bad either . My apologies for ' bumping ' up an old thread but i just had to have a say . I'm sure the OP had/has their reasons for their views . I live in the UK & i've found that collecting the Topps set has given me great enjoyment ' bidding ' against other collectors , of couse , the ' man ' with the most money usually gets the best cards , that's life . I don't begrudge them their card / set .
I think it's a great achievment for anyone to build a set that costs time , effort & money , no matter what the grades .
Many thanks for your welcome . I'm sure i'll be popping into the forums on a regular basis , i'm still trying to navigate myself around . I've a few questions to ask concerning various subjects & i want to post them in the right place , It's like a jungle out there !
There are many valid points given by a lot of collectors on this thread .
Myself , i'm just an average type of collector . With cigarette cards you can pick up some vintage sets in exc/mint condition for $40 or less , depending on subject / age etc .
With some luck i'll pick up some knowledge on baseball / football cards while i'm here , hope so .
instead of getting pi$$ed off, why not consolidate a little and try to move up to re-capture the top spot?
I recently started a Carl Yastrzemski Master Set, and the competition is sizzling right now. I was in 6th place when someone came out of nowehere and registed 78% of the set!! He moved up to 3rd...That bastarrd!! I was adding 5-10 cards per week. Who the He!! was he to add 150 cards--too much money to spend I figured.
In any event, I then bought out a competitor and now moved up to 3rd!! But not for long I say...via La Competition!!

Heck, I can't even get my kid to look at my Playboys much less my baseball cards!

That is my ultimate goal. I would love for my cards to stay in the family for a while, but my boys may never have an interest in them...??
FINISHED 12/8/2008!!!
