  • you know you have a problem when:

you buy an unopened wax box of 1989 topps for $8 instead of a complete set for $6.

this gum had better be worth $2!

I bought two wax cases of those back in 89, they're still in my closet along with two from 88. And they were supposed to make me rich one day. image

See, that's completely the wrong approach. Your power play here would be to a) buy the box, b) send the star cards along with $300 to PSA to have sixty $.10 cards encapsulated, c) grouse about 'turnaround times' when it takes longer than 30 days for your $.10 cards to get graded, and then d) sell your cards, once graded, on Ebay for a net $100 loss. Bonus points are awarded if you post your grades, and then mention that 'overall you're pleased' because you got 6 PSA 10's out of the 60 card submission, and then go on to mention that 'everything is available'.

I know some of you think this soon-to-come break is a joke, but 1989 Topps (and Donruss) were the first packs of cards bought for me (when I was nine), so those two sets bring back memories. There just better be some scans of course.

The moral of the story--one man's joke is another man's memories. image And yes, don't forget the scans.

    Good luck Scott.

How many boxes are you opening? It'll take quite a few to make a full set.

I opened a case of 89D in 1991 - the price dropped to nothing when everyone realized they produced this stuff by the zillions!

I paid 100 bucks for a case - it was a lot of fun - did it with my son.

+1 to Steve for being drunk enough to admit that he does, in fact, have 1000's of '89 Topps still kicking around the house, taking up valuable real estate in a closet somewhere, and that he's too much of a penny-ante packrat to take all that crap down the Salvation Army and take the tax write-off.

Quick query-- who here is as FUBAR as I am right now?

This is not true-- acronyms are rarely ambiguous. They can, however, be difficult to decipher.

So-- let me elucidate. Who else here has consumed in excess of 2000 calories worth of alcoholic beverages since sundown this evening? Do I stand alone (that's silly, I know Lee is with me), or are there brothers at my flank?

Ounces are relative to alcohol content, though. 2,000 calories of Lite Beer from Milller ain't the same as 2,000 calories of Bitburger.

    Either way, I'm covered. image

That's an excellent point, Grote, and one that I failed to consider in my previous post. I'm up to my lunch money in Bud Light right now (tonight was bowling night), and I'm starting to eye the warm vodka that's sitting on a shelf next to the dryer.

BTW, WTF is Bitburger? It sounds like something I'm going to have to get involved in.

I hate to be a stickler for semantics, but one does not 'put together' a 1989 Topps set. You 'put together' a T206 set, or a 1953 Bowman Color set. You 'end up' with 1989 Topps sets.

Sorry for the interruption. Let the discussion proceed.
  • i'm covered on the "calorie" count and i have a sad bit of news to share

i am unable to show you fine gents scans of these magnificent cards. after madly ripping the entire box i realized that the packs must have been search. i found NO gregg jefferies and NO jose canseco!!! can you f'ing believe that?!? well, once i realized this i immediately threw my scanner into the street where it was ran over by several 18 wheel trucks... sorry. maybe next time.

A smooth imported German beer I stumbled upon one night in a bar where insanely sized steins line the dark paneled walls.

Warm vodka will take you down quick, at least pop that bottle in the freezer!

I know all about the warm vodka curse. I ended up in a corner with a bottle of it during the ALDS in 2006 (Tigers v. Yankees), and I still haven't recovered.

I'll have to check out the Bitburger. I had a beer once called 'Chimay', and it was other worldly. If I could ever find anything close to that I would die happy.

Yes...T206's are fun if you're a rich dude with thousands of dollars to spend on cards. To me, I like the idea of putting together a set of more "modern" cards through wax packs. Would it be easier to just buy the set? Sure. But not NEARLY as fun.

Atlanta Braves, Charlotte Hornets, Shawn Kemp, Dale Murphy, and Bobby Engram.

Thank you for the World Market tip. I have one about six miles from the house.

See? Herein lies the glory of the Internet. The discussion begins with a helpless 1989 Topps rip, and concludes with one poster giving another a tip on where he might purchase a bottle of the best beer ever produced. If this isn't evolution in action, then tell me what is.

Oh, give me a freaking break. Do you want to know why I don't post threads on 'anything substantial'? It's because the way I enjoy sports cards would be of zero interest to anyone else here.

Do you want to know what I do, Mike? How I collect? Let me tell you. First, I load my four year old son in the family Rendezvous and take him to the local hobby shop. Then I give him $10 or so and tell him to buy as many $.25 packs as he can carry-- you know, stuff like 1988 Donruss and 1991 Score. Then we take this crap home and open it up. We pitch everything but the Tigers, Cardinals and Braves into the trash, and then, if i know anything about the players who are left, I tell him something about them. I tell him that Mike Henneman was once one of the dominant closers in baseball, or that Terry Pendleton was an awesome third baseman, or that Joaquin Andujar was my favorite pitcher growing up. And then, once we've gone through all these cards, and talked about the players pictured on the fronts, we put them in a big box and let my 1 year old daughter play with them.

If someone makes a post about being giddy over the arrival of a $7 wax box then I have no reservations about having some fun with that. And as you can see from Prscott's follow up posts, he's been more than willing to have fun with it as well. You have something to communicate to me? That's fine-- PM me, or post it in a civil tone. But I have no time for you 'Mother Theresea in a Lather' routine, especially when the issue at hand is a box of 1989 Topps.

Oh-- and welcome back. And for what it's worth, I do admire you for not creating an alt I.D. or something similarly childish. I said in another thread that I think you're an old sould with a good heart, and I stand by that. Whatever our differences, I'm glad to have you back on board.

I think that's a good position to take. And FWIW, I'm sorry if there were any hard feelings over that earlier thread. Although be advised that I fully reserve the right to be loud and boorish at another interval if I think the occasion demands it.

Thanx for the kind words Boo.

    Hardly Mother Teresa either.

I don't mind your wit - been enjoying it for a long time.

Just think you go out of your way to impress sometimes - but perhaps I'm over-dramatizing this - hey - I never said I was perfect.

But, on the '89 stuff - what you might see as trash may not be to some of the collectors here - just a thought.

And, it's obvious now - and I didn't catch it - that you've had a few - shoulda taken that into consideration.

I'll take off the contribution thing - sorry that was extreme.

edit: I edited the last post Boo - hope you don't have too much of a headache tomorrow.

I have three people in the world that I try to impress, Mike. They are:

    1) My son, Gabe.
    2) My daughter, Amelia
    3) My thesis advisor.

If, however, you accused me of having an inflated opinion of my own wit then yes-- you would probably be dead on. I don't suffer from a paucity of character flaws, Mike-- it's only that a desire to impress other anonymous internet posters is not one of them.

It's an examination of inefficiencies in the sports betting market for MLB totals. Or, at least I hope that's what it ends up being. I'm still putting my data sets together. If I don't see the correlations that I expect to find then I'm headed back to the drawing board, so please put in a kind word for me if you're the God-fearing sort...

I'm getting my Masters in Economics, so that's what that's all about. I also teach Technology Management and a Professional Writing class at the local University, although don't let that fool you-- I'm not really a contributing member of society. All of my work is part time, and 'between the margins'.

Hey, I hate to rain on the Chimay parade, but saying there is only one Chimay is just false.

There's Chimay Red, Chimay Triple, and Chimay Blue. All three are OUTSTANDING and you are cheating yourself if you don't try them all.

    Carry on.

Well - I'm glad I got that cleared up.

But, on the anonymous poster thing - I will have to say - many are not anonymous for me - I've had great conversations with many here - have met a few who have come to San Antonio or live here and look forward to meeting many at a national in the future.

Perhaps that may be a difference in our personal perspective?

I take a personal interest in the people who post here.
