uranium coins?

percybpercyb Posts: 3,328 ✭✭✭✭
I noticed uranium now trades on a commodity exchange for 78 --whatever that means.
Is Uranium a hard metal that could be used to mint coin or what?

If you hold on to uranium coins long enough you'll get lead poisoning.

  • If you go to "Coins and Money" in eBay and do a search for Ugly - you get 22 listings in auctions and 21 in Stores. Guess there are honest sellers out there! Here's one of 'em:

Couldn't find any uranium coins, but there are stock certificates in the category...

  • Too bad! We need massive new supplies of uranium. This is needed to fuel all the new nuke power plants we desperately need and China is currently building. I'd buy uranium coins except I wouldn't want to make a pocket piece out of one! image

Natural uranium, largely devoid of radioactive isotopes (which is why refinement is an expensive enterprise), poses no radiological hazard. Uranium toxicity is largely due to the fact that it is a heavy metal, among a large class which are not popularly thought of in terms of glowing monsters of science fiction. Its bulk modulus is nearly the same as silver's, indicating it certainly is coinable. (Melting point is less than 15% higher too at STP. Not sure at what pressure it melts at room temperature though.) In a slab, it should be handlable without consequence. However, it is as impractical as lead for commerce coins to be handled raw.

edited to add>> It also tones an ugly black.

That's not a function of hardness, it's a function of density. Think lead. Lead goes through steel too, but isn't as hard as steel, just much more dense.

    OK. Want some ugly?

I once, curiously, went surfing to see if there were indeed more than one way to skin a cat. Well, I found a vetrinary medical page devoted to the proper way to skin a cat. Here is a sample.
