I noticed uranium now trades on a commodity exchange for 78 --whatever that means.
Is Uranium a hard metal that could be used to mint coin or what?

That's not a function of hardness, it's a function of density. Think lead. Lead goes through steel too, but isn't as hard as steel, just much more dense.
