TTM Schmidt letter auto 25 years later

In third grade as a class assignment we had to write to someone famous - well with my dad being a phillies fan and my brother and I also going to the vet with him parking for free down some side alley streets - I became a phillies fan right along with him - so I chose to write to Mike Schmidt - received back this cool letter and a tastykake auto'd pic - I have that somewhere around here but thought I'd share the letter - the typewriter text is hilarious -

Very cool letter! Nice auto, too. Would look great on a 1/1 cut auto card image

And a stamp-sig to boot. image

J/K, it's obviously not a stamp. I got a Schmidt auto'd ball through a friend that had some connections back in the day. And Schmidt was always my favorite player and I had a gut feeling that he was genuinely a decent guy who appreciated his fans.

I don't care for the "modern" game, so Schmidt will always be my favorite.

So basically my kid won't be able to go to college, but at least I'll have a set where the three most expensive cards are of a player I despise ~ CDsNuts
  • Very cool letters. Schmidt is my all-time favorite Phillie. I had the pleasure to meet him a couple times at the annual Phillies' fund raiser.

My cousins actually had a boat in the same marina as Schmidt when he still lived up in the Philadelphia area. They ran into him a couple of times and he was always glad to sign an autograph. They have a couple of autos on boat bumpers which are pretty neat items.

I'd like to thank Schmidt for jinxing the Phillies in the 83 season, thus allowing the O's to bring home the only Pennant I will ever see in my lifetime. The sheer magnitude of bad Phillie juju that was sent out in thousands of letters before the season clearly screwed with karma, fate, etc....

I was living in a small town called Shillington, in south-eastern PA, back in the mid-to-late-80's, and while it is extremely improbable for Schmidt to have any reason to go to that town, I swear I saw him driving by my house one time. The car wasn't anything noteworthy, but the driver was a dead-ringer, and there was a cute gal in the passenger seat next to him. The driver, supposed Mr. Schmidt, seemed to have no clue where he was going and he looked lost and confused.

Anyway, this is probably the lamest story ever told on this board, but in the 0.00001% chance that was really Schmidt, then perhaps the story won't be quite as lame. I hope he found where he was going. image

oh man, you all are about my age! I remember letting a friend borrow an 82 topps schmidt for a class project...what does the
idiot do but glue it to a piece of posterboard! NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I would later, in 6th grade trade all my 82 Topps Ripkens for Juan Samuel rookie cards!!

Of course later I would at a show, trade my 85 Gooden rookie for 10 bucks in trade...4 of it cash and 6 in trade...what was that
6 dollar card? How about an 82 Topps Traded Ripken? HA HA. Mets fan always in the wrong!
