Scanning cards in holders?

I am looking for a little advice on how to quality scans of cards that are already in a holder. I know that most veterans of the hobby follow the saying "Buy the card and not the holder". Here are 2 cards that I think are really nice, but they look kinda blah in the scans.

Yea, they do look a little out of focus. I think the only option would be to upgrade your scanner.

It's an all in one print/scan/copy and its about 8 months old. But I really think it does a nice job on raw cards.
  • Actually, I find that scanning cards while in Ultra Pro penny sleeves causes the color to really pop (for some reason). But scanning them raw, or in Card Savers causes it to look gauzy. Just a tip.
Just a few examples of raw cards up for auction right now. (not a plug).

  • try scanning at a higher resolution or depending on your scanning software, you can sharpen the image and make other "fine tuning" tweaks which may help.

  • Hey HotMush... why is this card only VG ?

    creases? stains? looks pretty decent....

  • To be honest, I try to grade conservatively.
This card is a little more yellow on the borders than a pack fresh version and the corners are a little soft.
    There are no creases, though.
I never add 'could be a PSA X' to my auctions but I would say it probably would pull a 6.5 or 7.

It's likely a LIDE type scanner and not a CCD type scanner. LIDEs are nice because they're cheap and thin, but scanners that use CCD technology can handle depth better so the card in the slab looks crisp.
