1909 VDB...MS-70 Job?

MS-70 job? Original?

I personally think that it is original, however my affinity for color occassionally has me looking through rose-colored glasses.image

I could not agree with you moreimage
That seems to be my problem.

I think it's fine. MS70 tends to turn coins blue and purple. Doesn't seem to be the case here.

The coin may have re-toned after an old cleaning. The pattern of toning doesn't quite look right.

A very pretty coin, but the color dispersion doesn't seem right. Mike

Cleaned/dipped at some earlier point and not neutralized and rinsed fully. Cheers, RickO
  • All the MS70 I have seen on coins turns them pinks and blues...

    Not MS70

Nice look. Would have to see in hand to see if I thought it was cleaned, prior, and had retoned, but it looks nice.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

    I agree with those above.
  • Id say original. MS70 from what I hear turns copper blues and reds and purples. I have heard green is the one color that is usually original. I wouldnt say a past cleaning either. I may be wrong, after all its a picture. I put my money on 100% original.

Doesn't have the look of a cleaned and retoned copper at all; seems fine to me.

The more I stare at that coin the more I swear I can see the proof diagnostics, like the little die crack below the bottom of lincolns bust and the polish lines to the left of the wheat ear. Am I seeing things????

Completely and without question, original, IMHO.

Before this thread gets derailed I will state that it is not a matte proof.

  • matte like fields yes, matte proof coin? no. no die lines in front of old abe. i dont think its colored, retoned, cleaned, messed with. i think original, just wildly toned.

the bottom of the obverse reminds me of the 66 1916 matte proof at fun. it had a all red reverse but the obverse was fading on the only the lower portion.
i dont think that this makes it questionable.

It does sort of have the coloration and look of an MPL though, doesn't it?image

I checked the diagnostics for an MPL and I have concluded that I do not have a $100K coinimage

Believe me, I couldn't get that lucky.

  • every 09 vdb that i come across, i search for those dang die lines. just like all the 69-s lincolns.

theres a matte on the registry that has similiar colors. its one of my personal favs.

The best way to determine if this has been MS70'ed is to take an RB coin and apply MS70. I'm certain that you'll see the brown areas turn blue or some shade of blue.

at or nt, who cares? ;-)

that is not how i want my copper 1909 to look if i ever bought one.

Yes it certainly is worth the efffort to study every 09 VDB for the rim appearance and diagnostics. Without a doubt there are matte proofs out there, yet 'undiscovered'. To what degree they have been circulated or abused makes the hunt interesting.

With regards to this coin......is it not possible that the original collector neatly stored this coin when new along with his matte proofs,,,in that 'tarnish proof' tissue?
