62 Tarkenton card to be bumped to 8.5!

A few weeks ago, I received an email from PSA asking if I could send them four of my 62 Topps FB cards for their book project. After the holidays, I finally got around to sending them off. Subsequently, PSA made their announcement that they are moving to half grades.

After reading Joe Orlando's comment that not one collector called him regarding the new grading scale, I decided to call Joe to let him know that, after my initial surprise, I was in favor of the change.

When I mentioned to Joe that 4 of my 62's were at PSA for the book project and that I thought one or two were candidates for 8.5 grades, he graciously tracked down my cards and had the head grader review them. Turns out the grader agreed that my Tarkenton card would be bumped from an 8 to an 8.5. Paid $35 for the review and am now waiting for the grade to be posted. I couldn't be happier -- when I purchased the Tarkenton, I paid over SMR as the card was high end for the grade.

    AWESOME!

Nice to hear a good story amongst all the complaining lately. I hope to have a few nice bumps in my sub I just sent in...My 62 Tark RC isn't a candidate unfortunately. Its low end, but I only paid $500 for it...I can't imagine there are many 8.5 Tarkenton's floating out there in PSA 8 holders. Most I have seen aren't anything I would call bump worthy. Only 6 PSA 9's, I would bet the 8.5 will make a HUGE jump in value over the PSA 8's.

    You keeping or selling?

    Congrats,

8.5s are going to be worth considerably more than 8s--particularly for cards like this.

  • Thanks for the kind words. The card will stay in my collection. I'll try to post a scan before it is placed back in the safe deposit box.

Iron sounds like you did good!! Congrats.

I agree, at first I was against the idea, but then after thinking about it I was of the opinion that it is a good thing. Especially for those that chased quality over a cert number.

While I won't be resubmitting any cards in the forseeable future i too will submit raw cards going forward.

Again, congrats on your card getting bumped.

  • Its great to here, I would love to see a scan of yours when you get the card back. Heres a scan of mine that I sent this week . I've owned about 5 of these cards and this was the nicest one I've seen in an 8 holder.

    Tarkenton psa 8

I'm curious to what you think. The centering is the best I've ever seen and the corners above avg for the 62 topps .

  • When you talked to Joe, did he say when he thought the vcp and Pop report would reflect the new changes ? Just curious I saw there there was no new half grades on 62 topps yet.

    Dan,

You've got some great cards and some are shoo ins for bumps. My only complaint is that your scans take sooooooo long to load image It's the same on eBay too. Not sure if you could do something about it.

  • I never knew it took that long, when I click on them they pop right up,Your guess is as good as mine, I use a HP 3970 Scanner and scan at 150 dpi and the only way to load this picture is for me to create a link from Photobucket. I've tried and to load pictures , but they never look good unless I link them. If anyone knows , I would love to know.

Dan, what I do is scan at a higher DPI, but then reduce the size. Seems to make the scan cleaner for me.

For links, if you have the scans attached to your Registry sets, you can use those for posting here. Just open one of your scans, click "Properties" and then copy the web address for the Registry pic.

That is how I attached my Tarkenton. The address looks like this:

Jim, is that because 8's will be going down ? 8.5's going up ? or a little of both?

I think the answer is that the .5 will go up. the straight graded card will remain the same. low end examples will always sell for less then the nicer straight graded example.

thus an 8 will have three price ranges (like b4)

only know the .5 example has the grade to go along with the extra value.

Hi end cards almost always got more then their low end counterparts.

Cards with large spreads bewteen grades are the cards we prolly will see being submitted for a bump.

Of course the above is just my opinion, I just do not see accuratley graded straight cards with decent eye appeal going down in value.

.tiff is an enormous file type. Files are usually 10x larger than their jpg counterparts and even larger than the bulky .bmp

You can scan at a higher res/dpi but resizing becomes critical. Jason's image is smaller, but shows the detail just as well and it's 200dpi but only a 47k file( <1 sec on a 56k modem)

Dan's image, while larger is actually in lower res (150 is plenty fine for these types of scans though) but his file is 997k (closer to 20 seconds on a 56k modem) even on my T3 connection here at work, it took a couple seconds to download. Some of that can be attributed to photobucket but some of it is the file size (more than 20x the size of Jason's image.

I usually scan at 150 dpi then I just use Image Resizer. A program from Microsoft available from the "XP Power Toys" collection. Google that term and you'll find it. OR I can post a link for those that need it.

The "program" allows you to right click and image or a group of images (multi-selected) and resize to small / medium/ or large. You can use large almost all the time as it maintains the resolution and resizes beautifully for a 1024x768 screen. If you took Dan's image and ran it through this on Large you end up with about Jason's image. I'll run it and see what it looks like. By the way, the tool is free.

Edited: Here is the LINK to all the power toys

  • Thanks for the advice Envoy, but one problem. I use a Mac, and when I do try and resize the image it does just that resize it so small you it looks like a postage stamp.
    Thanks for the help.

a mac? What is that? image

Actually MAC's have very good photo editing software. I can't comment on any as I don't use one but I'm sure some here can give you a free tool to do what this one does.
