Home Metal Detecting

todays stuff 1-28-08

starting to enjoy working days again. have'nt been able to detect during the weekdays in about 3 years. hit the same home site from last week. strange, can't find my first silver for 08 yet. dug my third trade token from this site. good for 5 cents at the pohono club. also included, a train conductor button(cool since i work for the railroad), thimble with "caswell coffee" on it, and a silver half of a pocket watch. it has hall marks, but can't seem to id them. they are lion facing left, heart shaped sheild and a script "S".

Great stuff, even if no silver coins for you yet.

I've found some partial pocket watches myself over the years, but never a whole one, except for a small modern one that was made for a lady to wear as a pendant (a rather cheap one, I suspect). How 'bout you? Ever get a whole one?

A former dig buddy of mine claims to have found an early-1800s watch that started ticking when he knocked some dirt off it, but he's known to exaggerate and tell some tall tales. Nevertheless, I believe he DID find a whole watch, even if I suspect he confabulated the bit about it starting to run.

That old token and the button would both count as good as silver coins for me, while the thimble and the watch case count as lesser keepers, but keepers nonetheless. If I was finding stuff like that on a site of mine, I would be excited, because I'd know the Indian cents and Barber and Seated coins were not far off! But you already know that, having dug tons of that stuff.

I'll bet you have some monster shadowbox displays around the house, eh?

  • i have aquired alot of junque over the years. doodads and whatnots. i only kept the pocket watch part, cause it came in at half dollar on my DFX. upon further inspection, did i find that it was/is solid silver. usually those things are junk metal, which i quickly discard. i've recovered several whole pocket watches, but very nice. i had a friend once who dug a gold pocket watch, fully intact with a date of 1880 inside. was kinda digging a $20 gold piece.

Wow- I had no idea that was solid silver. Most of the ones I have found were plated.

That raises my estimation of that one somewhat. Definitely a nice keeper, even if it ain't the whole watch!

  • Nice finds... tokens and silver. Nice you can get out more this year. (you're already kicking my butt)

I found that same thimble... think you have found it before too (somewhere on your web site).

Here's the one I found last year:

Nice token. I think tokens can be very interesting. Anybody know of any good guide books on tokens?

Like Lord, I have found many pieces of watches but never one in its entirety. Exercise caution with the thimble as I have ruined them trying to "fix" them by unflattening the things.

    Nice finds Demo.
