I had my detector out for five minutes before it got dark. Not enough time to find anything, right? Guess again!
Astonishing! One can't help but to wonder what tales this screw could tell! Where did it come from? What were the people using it building? How old is it? It looks to be from about 1996, but it could be as old as 1989 for all I know!
Edit: On 1/30 I found this!
Well, at least it's roundish... I'm hunting in an open wooded area behind my apartment complex.

I'm only discouraged that it rained all last weekend and it's dark by the time I get home.

Like speer34 says: At least you know it works.
The good stuff will come in time but while waiting don't be discouraged by finds like this because it makes you think about the following:
A: You know you can find buried metal.
B: If you didn't find it, it may have never seen the light of day again, so you saved it!
C: Since you "saved" it, what are you going to do with it?
<< <i>I remember my first find.... a pull tab!!! I still have it. I will say this, keep your head up and stick with it. >>
I wish I still had my first pull tab! I would have it gold plated and wear it around my neck on a chain!
Happy hunting everyone!

<< <i>Looking back at your pic again, that looks like a headbolt from a 76 Chevy Luv I lost while rebuilding the motor out in the desert of Southern California... Where exactly are you anyway! I may file a claim on that find!

I'm way up in the Bay Area! It's probably as good of a guess as any. I pitched the thing into the trash. Now it's lost all archaeological context!
Heehee.
Won't be the last time, either.
I got a nice hex nut yesterday. No bolt to go with it, though. But I got a handful of nails.
<< <i>It all starts somewhere... and few of us find silver on the first 'beep'... as ASUTodd can attest to... Cheers, RickO >>
It was the first beep, too.. it was too dark for me to even see what was happening on the little meter.

Why do you go out at night!? I don't want to go to jail for this hobby..

<< <i>Why would you go to jail fro going out at night??? As long as you have permission to be where you are at it doesn't matter what time of day you are out there......

Ahh, I was thinking of going to the local school, where
1. No one is allowed after dusk without written permission'
2. No digging is allowed.
It's all kinda... felonious. But I can maybe scout out places where I can be after hours. If only California wasn't one big mud pit right now.
