Auto experts....Real or not?

Alright guys. I bought this ball last year from a card store I used to frequently shop at. The owner and I became friends and he called to tell me about a private collection of autographed baseballs he acquired from a friend. All of the baseballs were signed in person at shows he stated. At the time I was collecting alot of Mantle stuff, so he offered me this ball for $125.00 since it had no LOA. I told him that it was my intention to have it graded. He told me if the ball didnt come back authentic, he would refund my money. He does not sell any graded stuff, and he is starting to focus on his train collection, so he gave me great deals on stuff in the past.
I think the auto is legit. It is on an official MLB baseball with the Bobby Brown commisioner sig. The original owner had it signed in 1991.
What do you guys think? Send it? That means I will have to join again, but thats no biggie.
Give me your opinons please.

  • It's legit. Has all the correct ear-marks for a legit Mantle autograph.

Nice buy, at that price. image

Nice! I like where this is going. I sold alot of my Mantles to fund my 55 set, so it will be nice to have this in my collection to make up for the cards I sold. Yeah, you cant beat $125 for an auto of the Mick!

It is either real, or a VERY fine fake.

I suspect it would come back authentic.

It is important not to get addicted to the way his sig
looks on a flat. The frame of reference on a ball is a
    bit different.

His ball sigs often show some hesitation, skips and backtracks.
The flats are almost always smooth flow.

ANY good forger can do the Ms. The t, k, and y are often the
    best tells.

PSA/DNA has got scores of exemplars. They never miss on MM.

Not true...there are scores of Greg Marino forgeries OK'd by all the leading authenticators.

I can't begin to tell you how good his forgeries are. I have said before and I will repeat here, if you buy an autographed baseball or color photo signed in 1990 or later in sharpie by Mantle, Williams, or Dimaggio there is probably a greater than 25% chance you will be getting a Marino forgery, authenticated or not. The man was an artist.

Send it in and hope for the best...if you get it OK'd then you have hit the lottery, so to speak.

If you really want to buy an autograph of those guys the best bet, other than already authenticated pieces would be "vintage" signatures - ball point pen sigs on 3x5s and trading cards, etc. as there is a much greater chance of getting a "good" one.

That said, I personally think your ball has a good chance of being good.
  • That's a beauty. Nice and clean too.

Eagle eye, It is a very clean ball. I wish I still had the box. The owner of the collection had the ball in the box that you normally get when you buy an official MLB ball. It looks like he may have bought the ball at the show or event the day Mantle signed it. It was in the box with tissue paper and on the lid of the box was a piece of masking tape that said "Mantle Toledo, Ohio 1991" It added character, but I threw it out when I bought a plastic ball holder for it. I think its time to get it in a PSA/DNA holder.
