How I got started

This is how I got started metal detecting. My wife is a pretty innovative individual. We had only been married a few months when I had mentioned to her that I liked to read treasure hunting magazines. I showed her an article about a man who had found several rings, many coins, and other pieces of jewelry on a beach in Hawaii using a metal detector. That was in Autumn, 1994. On my birthday the following February, a package came in the mail with my name on it on my birthday. Low and behold, it was a Bounty Hunter Tracker IV metal detector. A few days later on Valentine’s day, I gave her the usual card, box of candy and a teddy bear. She said: “Your Valentine is out in the back yard.” I asked: “What in the world are you talking about?” She replied, “I bought a roll of quarters and threw them all over the back yard and now you have to go find them.” I did in fact find them all. Even the ones in the snow. I also found some additional coins that she had not put there. I have been hooked ever since.

One Friday evening about three years ago, I mentioned that I was going detecting. She said; “Don’t come home unless you find something for me.” Luckily, I found a silver ring with a jade color stone in it. I showed it to her when I got back home and of course, she was quite happy with it. Upon giving it to her, I said: ” Don’t ever tell me again to not come home unless I find something for you, as I might not be back for a month! ” She has not said that since. Here is a picture of the metaldetectinghound and my lovely wife on a mountain top in Colorado.

  • MDH,

That's a great story there. I loved your line you gave your wife about finding something for her.

Well, it doesn't take much guessing to figure out what your most valuable treasure is, and it ain't one that came outta the dirt! image

I too am lucky enough to have an understanding wife. I wish she had more interest in the hobby. She went along with me once when we were first dating, but I can see she has no real interest in it herself. She's supportive of my doing it, though, which is good. Not everybody has that support from their spouse.
