Perk, New home owners make out good from all the interest you can claim, and having kids is a real bonus. I dont remember getting all that much back as a single guy.
Sources on Capitol Hill and at the Treasury Department said the plan would send checks of $600 to individuals and $1,200 to couples who paid income tax and who filed jointly.
People who did not pay federal income taxes but who had earned income of more than $3,000 would get checks of $300 per individual or $600 per couple.
A Democratic aide and Republican aide said there will be an additional amount per child, which could be in the neighborhood of $300.
Those who earn up to $75,000 individually or up to $150,000 as a couple will be eligible for the payments, said Republican and Democratic sources familiar with the tentative deal.
First off it is not free, besides the fact it is money we already paid in taxes and/or money that someone someday will have to pay back in the form of taxes i'll pay my heating bill off which in turn will make the oil company even richer. Hopefully that money or some of it willget thrown back into research and that will be the only benefit of this boondoggle.
Oh yah Ill add a degree to the thermostat, ill still have to wear a sweater though.
<< <i>We'll be spending it on bills. I think collecting is pretty done for me for a while. >>
I'm with you on this one. I would've made my goal of eliminating credit bills had I not made a fairly large purchase at the close of the year. My cut is going on bills and I told my wife that she could have her part to do some of the shopping she's always wanted to do.
ill use it to pay my heating bill for the winter and throw some money at a credit card.
Most stimulus packages, like this one, are basically just handouts and they end up making even more debt. The money we owe is staggering and it's mostly owed to foreign banks and investors. Right now they are sweeping up houses, properties etc. We are selling off our countries assets for a cheap shot in the arm.
Seems a little short-sighted to me, but what do I know? I'm not an government stooge, nor millionaire.
I get the feeling the dollar is going to drop even more now. Crazy. Thanks for the handout Uncle Sam. What's really sad is I had to go to Wally World last night to pick up a few things and I overheard a couple of conversations while standing in line. The people were out spending the money they hadn't even received. They were like, well I should get this much back so I'm going to go ahead and get this. Great! Even more debt. My wife and I will throw it toward bills in our endeavour to become debt free.
To pay off bills. My credit card company sends me an annual report on spending, breaking it down by categories of purchases. Well, two categories include my payments through paypal (which cover most of my ebay and board purchases). Wow! When you look back on the amount you spend in a year on cards, I could have bought a small island in the South Pacific. (Ok, not quite that much, but you get the idea.)
But getting those elusive cards are still the draw for me.
And remember folks about this stimulus package: the more money you make over the $75K for singles and $150K for married couples, the less you will receive on the check as a phase out begins over the limits (these limits are for adjusted gross income, so that helps if you have deductions); and, the money could be simply the money you would be paying on your taxes next year. So you are getting the money now as opposed to next year.

For those old enough, wasn't this what was being said about the Japanese in th 80s? I know they bought a lot of properties (Pebble Beach for one) and took a big loss later down the road.
As for the refund check, I will use it to pay off what I will owe for my April 15th payment. I never let the government bastages have access to MY money for a full year.
If you really want to see an uproar over taxes, they should not withhold any taxes during the year and have us write one big check on April 15th.

If we get our check in April, part of it will pay for the vacation we had already planned. Any left overs, maybe I'll convince my wife to donate to the baseball card fund...
It is YOUR money. It was confiscated from you in a complex redistribution scheme. A tiny bit of YOUR money is being returned to you in the hope that the free-market can distribute it better/faster than the FAILED governemnt can.

So, once again the government logic goes like this "if you work your tail off and you and your wife make more than $150k, and you pay more in taxes than 90% of the population, then you don't deserve a refund. As a matter of fact, you not only don't deserve any of your tax money back, but we're going to give the money to those who paid NO TAXES at all".

I "should" be getting $1800 back. I finally have all my credit cards and cars paid off, so a big chunk will go to savings and the rest will be for my nice copy of 1957 Dodgers Sluggers.
I might wait out the urge to buy some 2008 Heritage until we receive our check, then spend my part on a case. I'm sure my wife can find something at Wal-Mart that she can't live without (like she does every time we enter that place!)
Good news!! I just went and adopted 26 kids yesterday!! With the two I already have, I should come out pretty well! After the check arrives, I'll spend about $1k of it on gas driving around dropping off the extra kids on random doorsteps in distant cities. After that, the wife and I will spend the rest on absinthe and exotic dancers until the last dollar is gone!

While I agree with this statement for the most part, in this country the amount one earns does not necessarily correspond with the actual amount of "work" performed. The more one is educated, generally speaking the less physical labor they will be required to perform coupled with a higher pay. It all has to do with specialized knowledge that the general population does not have.
I am kind of confused with those that pay no taxes getting a refund though. How can you get a refund if you did not pay in the first place? However those folks probably could use the small amount of money a whole lot more than those making 150k+.
