Gibby was awesome. One of the stupidest things Mike Ilitch ever did (and he's done quite a few) was to retire his number--but in honor of a far inferior player, Willie Horton. Huh?
Hey guys! It's been a long while since I've searched the board and posted, but I thought I would check in and see if anyone could help me out. I'm looking for the following cards from the 1981 set to finish it off:
Looking for a really sharp 8 of this card since the only 9 is in a regsistry set. I'm a corner guy so I would prefer to have one with print or centering issues and not weak corners:
#101 BENNY AYALA (Have one of the 8's already, but mine has great centering and solid surface but weak corners)
Looking for these in 9 or 10:
#48 DAVE SKAGGS #179 RUDY MAY #297 BOB BAILOR #333 SID MONGE #339 JOHN ELLIS #534 DAVE SMITH #559 WILLIE MONTANEZ (Would also consider this card in a sharp 8 as the one and only 9 might not be available) #615 RICK DEMPSEY
If any of your guys could help, I would really appreciate it. I would be willing to buy or trade for some of my extras of 1981 or other years.
Thanks for looking over the list!

Looking for 1975, 1978, and 1979 Topps Baseball in high end PSA 9 and PSA 10. ______________________________________ The best presents in life are the ones you give yourself!
Im up to about #10 in the registry and about to turn in a preety large submission. Im still looking to add to my collection. Looking for 9's and 10's. - Willing to trade or buy. Prefer to buy in lots where I can.
Good luck with your submission Jesse! Are you sending in any exciting low pop cards? You know, so we can live vicariously through you and agonize over whether or not the grader will have a good day?
Smokie - Great job on #48 Dave Skaggs and #101 Benny Ayala! You have me jealous. Frank
Looking for 1975, 1978, and 1979 Topps Baseball in high end PSA 9 and PSA 10. ______________________________________ The best presents in life are the ones you give yourself!
I am now only working on the Tigers set from this year (which unfortunately has a lot of tough cards). I just got two Tim Corcoran (#448) cards back from PSA, both of which got PSA 9s (pop 8 with no 10s). If anyone needs this card and has the following to trade in PSA 9 (or maybe two of these in 8s?), let me know:
#217 Rich Hebner #273 Stan Papi #291 Aurelio Lopez #468 Johnny Wockenfuss #593 Steve Kemp #827T Kevin Saucier
Hi guys, just signed up for the board to join this forum. I'm currently sitting 20th on the registry list and been pretty inactive the past couple years. Looking to pick this set back up and saw a good discussion here. Looks like there are quite a few people here that have a great deal of knowledge about this set. It's always been a favorite of mine because it's the first cards I can remember my dad buying me when I was a kid. Obviously from those days none of those made it through in pristine condition. I know this one is a long term project and I'm looking to build a set consisting of PSA 9's and 10's.
A couple basic questions for those of you who have been pretty active:
How do you recommend getting started for someone who is only around 10% right now? I have considered buying some unopened material or some sets to evaulate for possible submissions to PSA. I also see 4 Sharp Corners has joined the '81 Topps market. I'm torn between putting some money behind unopened material to hope to find gradeable cards or getting started by purchasing some of the cards as they come up to auction on ebay to kind of build up a little first.
On the raw cards, are you finding centering is more the problem or the corners are more the problem? From my recollection, I remember those 81 corners being very easy to "chip". I also can remember some of those coming very off center though.
The centering is impossible. The prices from 4 sharp corners are very competitive with your cost to do it yourself. I would buy what I could from 4 sharp corners, buy some rack boxes to search for some toughies and try to trade with folks who are almost done!
I bought tons of raw and am now the proud owner of 65 Johnny Benches that are OC with a smudge......But I also got a couple of PSA 10 Pops 1s and lots of PSA 9s....
Best of luck and I am always around to answer any questions about 1981s. I don't know everything, but I am 99.17% complete in PSA 9 with the last few cards at PSA....It took me about 6 years to find all the cards, but it has been fun....
Thanks for the feedback Les. I had considered the 4 Sharp Corner pricing. Considering it would cost me $5.50 plus shipping even on PSA specials, I am seeing a lot of stuff they have even in PSA 10 condition to not really be much of a premium over the submission cost. Even with a sharp eye, I can't always spot 10s. The one set I have major PSA experience with is 86-87 Fleer basketball. That one is very condition sensitive as well, but the corner and edge faults I think are easier to see on those due to the red borders. I just started back on this set the other night and bought a Henderson PSA 9 off ebay that took me to 19th on the registry.
I had a spreadsheet working on my inventory that was tracking my dupes but I lost my latest copy so am starting from an older version. I'll need to fish through my '81s to find the extras. My registry list is complete though as far as what I have. I also need to buy me some protective covers I guess to keep the cases from scratching. Right now I'm just using some large boxes and stacking the PSA's in them. Also interested to hear how you guys with this thing almost finished store them.
Busted a few cellos and I can echo it's tough to find these centered. Out of 6 cellos I found 11 cards that I evaluated as 9 or better. Fortunately, 2 of them were Raines and Yount. Those 2 should get at least 9. Also found a really nice Neil Allen #322. That one only has 1 PSA 10 so I'll keep my fingers crossed. I had a couple I feel pretty good about a 10 on so we will see. I'm putting a few other cards together to join and then do another submission.
On the brightness of the colors, I found a really nice Junior Kennedy but it appeared some of the green under his name was a little yellowy almost. That card is just kind of bland on the colors anyway. If not for that part I'd think it was a 10 but not sure I want to waste a submission with one like that. I had one Ayala and it was backed up to the gum and the gum had literally almost eaten through the card
Good luck with the sub! Neil Allen is pretty tough, but Junior Kennedy is one of the easier cards. If it isn't a 10, don't send it...You can buy it for cheap.
Thanks. I bought a raw set on a lark and not too much in it gradeworthy so I guess for raw cards I need to stick with packs. Interestingly the only high grade card I really found was Molitor. I may try that one.
I'm certainly seeing on what little unopened I've tried that the centering is so bad that in many cases I'm better off to just buy from 4 Sharp Corners when they run specials. If you can buy the 9's and 10's you need for just a few $ over submission cost that isn't a bad deal. My eye is pretty good but it's hard to judge what gets a 9 and what gets a 10 sometimes so if you can just outright buy the 10's you end up better off from a cost perspective unless you can hit 65%+ on what is a 9 and what is a 10. For instance, I'm pretty sure my Molitor is a 10 on edges, corners, surface, the centering is great as well, just not sure if the centering is 10 worthy or not.

I am guessing that it's going to fetch the highest price of any card in this set to date.

A couple basic questions for those of you who have been pretty active:

On the raw cards, are you finding centering is more the problem or the corners are more the problem? From my recollection, I remember those 81 corners being very easy to "chip". I also can remember some of those coming very off center though.
