I scouted out my location today...

Pulgas Ridge Open Space Preserve

It wasn't too crowded; just a handful of people, though I was there at 4:00 pm, when it was starting to get dark. Ideally, I'd like to get there at 6:30 am, when only insane joggers are out. Here's some shots I got:

I should be able to hit it on the first weekend of February!

What kind of history to the place?

It's pretty enough, that's for sure.

From a webpage called "Walking the dog at Pulgas Ridge"...

Pulgas Ridge is a 366-acre preserve that was once the site of Hassler Health Home, a tuberculosis sanitarium owned by the City of San Francisco. The sanitarium operated from 1926 to 1972.

I'm SO thinkin' Mercury dimes. image

I walked around the place, thinking: If I had TB, what would I do? Is there a good picnic area? A place to sneak off for some afternoon delight before death comes a knockin'? I have some decent areas already staked out and I read the rules-- there's nothing that says you can't detect or dig. And no matter how much I dread it, I can walk down the hall from the IT room at work and get a tetanus shot in about five minutes for free-- I should do that if I'm going to be sticking my hands in holes looking for metal things.

Oh, yeah, the sanitarium. Didn't you mention it previously?

I think Merc dimes are a real possibility. Not sure what's out on the trails, but certainly around where any old buildings are (or were), it could be good shooting.

I hunted an old sanitarium in NC once. It had been built in the late 1800s.

We weren't there long, but I got a Merc from the 1920s. One of the guys with me might've found an Indian cent- I forget.

  • sounds like looking for a needle in a haystack. never heard of anyone hunting there before, but i know a few who would.

i too hunted a sanitarium here in san jose/ santa clara area(Agnews). the city sold it to sun microsystems and it was almost entirely demolished. found many nice coins in there.
