The Mount Rushmore of QB's, RB's, and WR's....

Canton just called, and they got some mountain land at a good price! They are looking for an artist to sculpt the Mount Rushmore of Football players. They want to start off by honoring the Qb's, then the RB's, then the WR's. THey realize that since there are so many more players than there were Presidents that they are going to allow FIVE players from each of those positions to be sculpted into mortality!

They want some help picking the players. Be careful because once these guys are selected and etched into the mountain...there will be no taking them off. So if you are choosing a player who is still playing and has time to really tarnish his legend by future poor play and go the way of Terrell Davis, or tarnish his image like any NFL player seems capable of doing, it can be a risk.

Criteria? 1) How good were they? 2) How did they match up to players in their era? 3) Were they considered the best of the best 4) Are they known by the casual fan, or even the non fan. They are going to be on a mountain after all. 4) How was their character? They are going to be on a mountain after all.

You can edit your picks if you read other picks and decide to change your mind.

Here is mine to start, in no particular order. They are all being honored equally.

Quarterbacks
Unitas
Favre
Brady
Montana
Marino

Running Backs
Payton
Brown
Sanders
Tomlinson
Emmitt

Wide Receivers
Rice
Lofton
Moss
Alworth
Largent

The second part! If you were forced to pick just FIVE players regardless of position to be put onto this Mount Rushmore of NFL, who would they be?

Mine....

Montana
Favre
Brady
Rice
Payton

as a packer fan i would have to say you need to switch lofton for hutson. his records were the ones rice beat. his routes were the ones rice perfected. hutson average 0.85 TD's per game played in his career. not too many can match that.

for the overall, i think you have to put halas on there with lombardi. everyone plays for the lombardi trophy, and halas is really the founder of the league.

  • Interesting to see zero defensive players

There is absolutely no way Hutson could be left off any list of wide recievers. I have a real hard time accepting any arguement that he is not the second best ever. Harrison would also seem like a good choice

Tomlinson does have a decent chance of ending up with a better career than Marshall Faulk, but without a Super Bowl, and being three years away from passing him in total yards I would bet against it

To me, Barry Sanders is the best non-QB in history. The Lions are by far the worst franchise in all of team sports. Yet give them one particular running back and they are consistently a playoff team. That is far more amazing than Payton, Smith or Rice winning Super Bowls on some of the greatest teams ever

Harold "Red" Grange did more to popularize pro football than anyone.
Games were sparse in interest and fans, until the Galloping Ghost brought 50 and 60 thousand plus fans into the parks, to see him play.
A true pioneer, and quite a fine runner.

Sammy Baugh ( once led the NFL in passing, punting, and interceptions one season ), Bronco Nagurski, Jim Thorpe, and Don Hutson are a few of the superstars before TV.

I almost always try to reserve final judgement, or mountain status, on active players, we cant be sure what stats they will eventually have, or tell what "problems" they may incur in the future.

    I'll pick five for the overall hill;
Grange, Unitas, Brown, Montana, and a defensive guy, Chuck Bednarik.
This aint no party,... this aint no disco,.. this aint no fooling around.

Quarterback: Joe Montana - Case closed.

RB: Jim Brown - Case closed.
RB (short yardage): Earl Campbell - Case closed.

WR: Randy Moss - arguable yes, but in his prime he was the best I ever saw.

holding a spot for Tom Brady if he wins SuperBowl #4, or he plays 5-6 more years and continues to dazzle us all.

and there should really be some defensive guys on our stone tribute eh?
