Making prints of finds....

I’ve been toying with the idea for a while of printing and framing a picture of some of my better finds. Anyone else having done or thought about that?

I thought I’d start by making one with silver coins. I first put coins in a matrix with all being the same size (like the rings I have in my signature), but thought it looked boring and didn’t make the bigger ones stand out…

… so I adjusted it to show the correct relative sizes of the coins, as shown in the picture below. The actual image is quite a monster - about 3,500 pixels wide, and each coin is a separate layer with a transparent background (to enable moving them around and changing the background color)
There’s some info under each coin about size, weight, mintage, etc.

There’s a faint image of a 1 Euro coin in the bottom right corner to show scale compared to a common modern coin.

Of course, there’s always the problem of deciding when to have such a picture made. I might find something really good on my next outing, and then I’d be bummed that it isn’t included in the picture… grrr….. image

I’ve been toying with the idea of spicing up the picture with a scenic shot, e.g. like this:

… or something more dramatic like this:

Thoughts?

I too have thought of this, but nothing so ambitious as you've posted, there. I only thought of making prints of single finds. I just got a temporary frame to protect the Ming Medallion poster, but one day hope to frame the poster along with printouts of the story.

Ditto for my 1658 Spanish coin and the newspaper article about it.

But I never thought of anything like you've done there.

Combining the black background of those as you did with the scenic horizon shot is an absolutely stupendous effect!

The only downside to it that I can think of is the one you did- as you add finds, your poster becomes "obsolete".

That is, unless you make one each year, sort of as Riccar just did with his "year in review" picture. Have a group shot of each year's better finds, along with your best scenic sunset shot from that particular year.

You really have my mind churning on this one. VERY cool idea.

Alas, I personally lack any wall space to hang such a thing, as we live in an undersized mobile home. If I ever get my workshop in the backyard properly "finished" as my office space, though, look out! I'll wanna do something like this.

BTW, some of us might wanna see links to the fullsized pictures, so we can scroll along them in admiration... image

(Edit- or maybe not, if they are THAT huge. Still, kudos for a really neat idea!)

I have a Roman coin reference poster called "The Roman Emperors".
Here is a tiny, borrowed stock photo of it.

They have a Byzantine version, too.

For the "Greek Coins" version, they added a map on top.

These are what your poster immediately reminded me of.

Excellent, that was what I was hoping for - potentially lure out some pics to drool at... image

...but you have walls I'd assume... then there's no problem - just take something else down image
Hmm..... I can see how that could create some interesting "discussions".... image

(Duh, never mind. I just asked what the bottom-right coin was before reading that it was your Euro-for-scale.)

Zot, get one of the new digital photo frames... they display many pictures, or you can stop it on any particular one. That way you can add, modify or take away as you please - and enjoy digital quality as well. Cheers, RickO

That's a good idea, too. But I still like the low-tech poster idea.

I use a slideshow of my Roman coins as a screensaver at work.

I have a small digital photo frame on my desk. They're pretty neat, and have really dropped in price quite a bit.

A picture like this would need a large frame though...
There are some quite nice wall mounted ones nowadays, with quite OK resolution, built-in wireless LAN, etc.
They're still somewhat expensive though; I think a 22" or so model would set you back $1k or more, and quality is still inferior to a good quality poster...
The other drawback is that it's just a single frame... I could imagine having two pictures on the wall, one with silver coins and the other with copper/bronze coins, for example.

Edited to add: Ha! I was pretty close. Here's an example

  • Great idea. I love it. image
It's a great way to create a sort of MD scrapbook.

LM's idea of using the year end summary pictures could be something for me.

Also, my family received one of the digital picture frames... that would be a fun display too.

Hmmm.... thanks, got the cogs whirring image

  • ooohhh, and you could do one for military related finds, buttons, buckles, etc.> one for jewelry> for tokens> other stuff? image

Indeed you could... although in my case rather small prints would suffice to cover some of those categories.. imageimage

  • Zot,

That is an awesome idea and I personally love the Black background. From my perspective, I think the coins REALLY stand out with that background. When it comes to pics, I know how to take them and get them on the web, but as far as putting both sides of the coin next to one another--forget it, I'm lost!!!!

With all of that being said--if you do decide to go with a "Scenic shot", you have to get a furry critter in the background somewhereimage
