80s Star basketball- Any experts out there?

I'm looking to put together a nice 1984-85 Star set, but I'm unclear about the counterfeiting/illegal printing situation. Here are my questions:

- Were only the good cards counterfeited and/or printed years later, or did they do every team set?
- There seems to be an inordinate number of the crappy team sets available, and sellers seem to have the same combination of sets. Anybody know why this is? For example, I just bought a lot of 13 team sets, and I see another seller is selling the same exact sets individually in their bags. What are the odds that two different sellers have the same exact team sets?
- If there are fake/illegal bagged sets out there, is there any way to tell the differences between them and legit sets by looking at the plastic bag and how it's sealed?

Thanks.

I am an expert. That is a good article he posted and is one of the better resources. There is an article about the NBA suing Levin but I cannot find it.

    This might help.

    Article Re: Robert Levin Lawsuit

Dear Babe: In the 1980s, I stumbled upon a limited printing of Star basketball cards. I ordered a complete set in 1984. I got Michael Jordan's card No. 288, Jordan's Gold Olympics card (195) and Jordan as a Chicago Bull (101). The set also has Charles Barkley's rookie card. I have the whole set (not in a box) of 288. They say "Star '85" on them. _ John Muhoberac, Mount Joy, Pa.

It sounds as if you might have the real deal here if you got them back in 1984 or '85. These cards have been counterfeited and a number of "original" cards were supposedly found years later. In 1997, I reported that the NBA had sued the former Robert Levin, owner/producer of Star cards, and Shop at Home, the TV cable sales channel, to stop distribution of the cards. "The lawsuit was settled in our favor," said the NBA's Matt Bourne. "It was a civil litigation and he ultimately agreed to turn over the cards for destruction." The NBA reached an out-of- court settlement with Shop at Home. While Levin was licensed to make cards in the mid-1980s, there was no license for the second run that was produced in the mid-1990s. No one knows how many of those unlicensed cards made it into the secondary marketplace via SAH. The cards came in team bags.

I've been told that an expert can tell if the bag is an original or from the so called "warehouse" find, which we now know were just cards printed. Even though the Jordan cards were the most valuable, there wasn't any evidence back in 1997 to indicate that any of his cards or the Bulls sets were among the cards printed illegally. The scandal aside, assuming your set is authentic, you're looking at a set that Beckett's yearly basketball lists for $4,800 in "near mint" condition. Jordan's rookie card (101) lists for $2,800 - it's been at that spot for a decade. The other two Jordan cards book at $375 each. They'll be worth even more if they earn high grades from one of the top grading companies. Barkley (202) lists for $225. The guide says the original production run was supposedly limited to just 3,000 sets.

It really doesn't say much, but I was able to retrive some basic information about the lawsuit. The lawsuit was filed in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. At the minimum, you can see all the parties who the NBA sued.

I use to be big into Star back in the glory days, boom days of 92-94. I thought I couldn't miss....well, I did learn a good lesson about "hot investments" and "can't miss opportunities".

I'm not an expert by any stretch, although I have observed the market for awhile...

-It seems like some bags from 84/85 are in higher quantity than others. Compare the cheaper bags, the $10-20 ones, with the Jordan Olympic bag, or the Rockets or Jazz. I think Indiana use to be the shortest print set in 84/85 (I think 2,000? and the others were 4-5,000). It use to sell for a premium, it was $40-60, and the other common bags were $15-20.

-Kruk Cards has been selling *alot* of team bags and sets. Too many for my tastes. I dont know what the story is there. Maybe take note of the bags they have in high quantity. It's not at all an indictment of them, they might be perfectly legitimate. Nothing against Kruk, but its been alot.

With Star in general, and with 84/85, I think the cloud of suspicion and doubt is worst than reality. The reality is, the bags still have some value. Not nearly as much as they use to. But if they were reprinted so heavily, why aren't they all $5 bags by now?

Some cards have gone way down in value. Like the Gatorade Barkley, short print. It use to be $500, and now it's $20-30. But its not true for every other bag, like the Jordan Olympic bag, Olajuwon's rookie, Stockton.

Then you factor in PSA, and the fact that they don't grade them. If they did, and registry sets caught on, then how high could they go.

Isn't the Jordan bag still $1,500-2,000 graded? It's hard to imagine that it got heavily reprinted and it's still selling for that much. That's what I've never understood. Maybe contact some of the Star experts, like Steve Taft, and see what the differences are or what the story is.

BigBoyd has likely made over $100,000 selling the fake ones of the stars. They are not the reprints levin did, but a different set. I posted about it a while back so go digging.

So I guess with these Star b-ball cards, the question is not "are these cards real?" but "are there any real cards at all?"

Most are real Estil. They made a ton of sets and many were of semi star players. I would be cautious buying any of the "cooler" cards.
Collecting PSA graded Steve Young, Marcus Allen, Bret Saberhagen and 1980s Topps Cards.
Raw: Tony Gonzalez (low #'d cards, and especially 1/1's) and Steve Young.

I actually did buy a set of these back in 1984 - opened each team bag and put them in sheets, where they still reside today.

My question - were all team sets re-printed, or just the ones listed in the article like the Bulls set and Olympic set? So if you have a Clippers or Pacers team set, is it definitely real, or were those re-printed as well?

Thanks for the info so far, but my questions were never really answered. Keep it coming if you know anything else.

    Lee,

I have a few NBA press releases regarding the law suit. I'll see if I can find them when I get home tonight. The Levin / Shop at Home law suit never indicated that cards previously issued were reprinted, rather that "newly discovered" sets purported printed in the 80's and subsequently found in the 90's were, in fact, printed in the 90's. This sets included a 1986 Crunch 'n Munch All Star set, 1986 Lite All Star set, 1986 Bulls Arena set, a 10 card 1984 Michael Jordan Olympic set and a 10 card 1984 mixed player Olympic set. These sets are very easy to identify because they have different colored boarders. I have a few of these sets and will post some pictures this evening.

BWT, did you ever get that Yaz rookie graded?

Mike- Thanks, but I pretty much know all the lawsuit stuff. It mostly centers around the reprinted sets with Jordan in them, and right now I'm more concerned with the rest of the set and whether it was reprinted, and if so how you can tell the difference between those sets and the original ones.

Just about every highly valuable Star basketball card has been counterfeited. Most of the counterfeits are not very good - wrong font, border color, missing logo, etc.

Most counferfeits found have just been of the superstar cards, not the whole set. However, nothing stops a crook from substituting the fake for the real one inside a team set, leaving all the less important real ones there, and selling the real one separately.

As for dealers with quantities of the same sets, I can't ansewr that without knowing more about the dealers.

Lee, to answer your question- this is my opinion just from mostly watching Star cards for the past few years on eBay. I do not think all sets were reprinted. Levin reprinted the sets that are mentioned in the article and then a few counterfieters made the Jordans, Stcoktons, and a few others. I do not think many team sets are counterfeited as that would not be that profitable and would be hard to counterfeit all the commons, why not just do the key card that sell for as much as the set. The mast majority of fakes are the sets Levin did and the keys cards that are pretty easy to spot just like any other fakes in other sets. If you really want the scoop on everything Star call Steve Taft.

I knew that I had this somewhere...I think this might be what you're looking for Lee.

This is an excerpt from an SCD press release when they started grading Star basketball cards. It also appeared in the Feb 1, 2002 print issue. Keep in mind that this info was current as of 2002 and there may have been developments since. The article establishes Steve Taft and Todd Crosner's expertise with Star basketball cards and indicates that they are (were) the two Star authenticators for SCD. It then goes on to state that...

You can probably deal directly with Taft at Steve Taft Enterprises and Crosner at Santa Monica Sports Cards. Both are located in California.

Pulled this thread out of 2008 to post some examples of the Shop At Home Star cards...these were suposedly created in the 80's and warehoused until '96 or '97 when they were sold on S@H...there were no second series Crunch 'n Munch or Lite all stars...

FWIW here's a scan of my Jordan purchased at the time of issue, so I know it's legit. I can provide a better resolution scan to anyone if you'd like to see any specifics on a legit version...

I only buy baseball Star Co. sets from 83 to 87, b/c no one would ever waste their time counterfeiting them. image

Kruk does sell a lot of bagged sets. I bought a 1983 All Star Set for $10 a while back from them. Pretty cool, with Dr. J, Bird, Magic, Kareem, etc. Tuff borders too. Thinking about picking up some other non-Jordan sets.

I have never seen anything in Kruk's dealings that would suggest they are intentionally selling counterfeits. They were one of the first bulk sellers of cards in the mail order publications so the Star basketball stuff could legitimately been left over from the 80s when they originally bought them. Or maybe it's all stuff from a collection they bought. Who the hell knows, but you don't see them with the Minor league or SLU counterfeits that other guys are making an easy buck off of.

I'd be willing to bet that if you picked up an old SCD from the late 80s or early 90s you will see some of the same stuff they have in their ebay store now.
