Ancient and hammered coins grading at the 'New' ANACS

ajaanajaan Posts: 17,457 ✭✭✭✭✭
A couple weeks ago I sent James Taylor an email asking him if ANACS will be grading all ancient coins, not only Roman coins, and hammered coins. I figured since JP Martin works there now it would be logical to do so since JP was ICG's ancient coin guy. Got a reply from James today:

Don,

Yes, starting in another month or two, we will be grading all ancients and hammered coins.

    This is interesting news.

For now, I am content to keep my collection raw (for one thing, it takes up less album space that way, and I can fondle my ancients lovingly), but one day I might wish to entomb them in plastic, assuming I can get a good bulk submission deal on over 100 coins, and they'll give me a pedigree label.

But first I still have much work to do with the set, and not all of the coins are slabworthy, anyway. Not only would I like to "complete" it (as if anyone could ever "complete" a set of Roman Imperial coins, haha), but there will be upgrading to do before Slabapalooza day comes.

  • I'm curious to see what happens at ICG now also. I have a submission of ancients in at ICG and am awaitng news as to if they will be looking at them or returning them.
Customer service says that I'll know in a day or two what their decision is.

As far as ANACS, I prefer the ICG holder, but I also prefer to have an option, so I hope SOMEBODY gets up and running soon.

It would be great if both ANACS and ICG certified ancients. Competition is good.

I like ICG for ancients, and since their "ancient guy" is now with ANACS, I'm sure they will be good.

I had a conversation with Cameron a few days ago to discuss a couple of ICG '90' No-Grades. The answers I got were 'JP's notes in the computer'...

He also recommended that no ancients be sent to ICG.

My relationship with ICG might just have ended. I am not happy and am deciding what to do about it.

I stopped sending them US coins years ago.
World coins are better sent to PCGS and NGC...
Their only niche' for me was Ancients.

Edited to change Cammie to Cameron (see below for the lecture) image
  • JP's notes in the computer were all I could go off of because JP is gone as you know. Also, Cammie might be a funny forum name and said in fun, but repeateldly calling me that on the phone without even introducing yourself is not that professional. I tried doing the best I can with what I hadimage

ICG is not grading ancients at this time and we suggest not to send them in until we have the experts to do it.

Cameron - I may have missed it on another thread - but are you officially a "daddy" yet? How is Mom and the baby?

    Congrats in advance!

That is great news! I feel that ANACS, with it's longer history and better name recognition, will cause the public to have much more trust in ancients that ICG ever did (or could have).
