Wishing Well Hunt

Well I'm off today to hunt an old wishing well from the early 1900's. A guy I work with inherited a farm that has an old well on it that the locals used to throw money into as a wishing well. I can't get into the well, full of water, but I can search the surrounding areas. I'll post a write up about it later tonight!! Wish me luck!

Good luck- be sure to toss a coin in the well - might help with the luck!

Unless it is actively used by the owner, I would figure a way to dredge it, then detect the sludge. Cheers, RickO

In talking with him it used to have a large built well house over top of it complete with bucket and winch. The "pipe" that goes to the water is only about 9 or 10 inches wide and goes down about 8 feet. Or so he says, I won't see it until about 1 pm today. I should be able to make some assesment of it then. He stated that he tried to drain it once but didn't succeed. Anways, time to get my stuff together and roll on down the road. LATA!!!

Didn't find a freakin' thing..... well I take that back.. found some old brass of of some really old shotgun shells. I actually think they may have been nickel and not brass. Hard to tell in the mud. Anyways, we found nothing at the well or the old house revisited. Not sure if it was me and my inexpreience or if there just wasn't anything there. Of course we dug nails and pull tabs but nothing that was keeper. I'm pretty bummed about it because I had been looking forward to this all week. Oh well...
I left the old well and went to an old school house. Seems that someone recently hit it pretty good and once again I was shut out. I guess this is bound to happen every once in awhile. Sorry for letting you guys down!!!

Old houses / farms can be tricky.... not necessary super productive, but the stuff that you do find can often be good...
You'd think there has to be at least some coins there to be found...
    Better luck next time! image

You may want to go back there some time in the future... if you cleared a lot of junk, it may be more productive the second time around. Cheers, RickO
  • Old farms are seldom very productive....BUT.......what you do find id often times pretty neat. Look where old clothes lines may have been located..(Tress with wire still in them or swollen trunks where the bark has grown over the wire afterwards)....Look near fence lines.....go to the back of the farm, where the windows are and in the sight zone, search those areas...sometimes the owners would bury their money in the back yards, in sight of a window, so it could be checked just by looking out of the window...Look for the place(s) they buried their trash..

    Good luck!
