PGCS Wood Slab Box holder

I see some people have PGCS wooden box slab holders?

Who sells these? They look very nice.

Thanks,
John

Just bought one last night on the PCGS products link main page
  • Are they coated so that they don't outgas? I like the look of wood trays and slab holders, but have always worried about what these might do to my coins with regard to toning.

The stain is sealed, I don't thing you have to worry about toning other than the air conditions of where they are stored.

There are other sources that sell similar boxes that hold NGC and ANACS slabs as well. Not sure of the names but I have seen them at different shows.

Nothing is airtight for coins unless it's been molded in at least a 4" cube of lucite!
That's what I've been told anyway. Very few materials are impervious to all elements. It just takes longer for some IMO.

I bought one of the thirty coin boxes....and when I got it the bottom back had come apart from the sides. No joinery, just glue, and the glue gave up. I was going to return it, but just reglued and clamped it. The look good, but they are cheaply made.

Because they are made cheaply and the sellers can make a profit. Cheers, RickO

Well, Im a woodworker, a builder of new wet plate and daguerreotype cameras, and if I were to make that box, it would be much better. Of course, Id charge at least 100$ for it.

  • A few of us bought em' back when they first came out (a couple years back) and a bunch of posts hit the boards about whether or not your coins were in jeopardy if housed in wood that has been stained/finished. There are many different opinions on this but I decided to send mine back. PCGS refunded me in full.

  • Hi Ellewood, image

Remember me? I started that whole anti- wood ruckus if I recall correctly, with the help of Mr. Spud etc. They did refund your money but did they ever take a stance? Seems they are still for sale image Good link above - here is something else I just found:

2manycoins2fewfunds - <<Let me warn everyone that I had a PCGS 30 coin mahogany box full of silver coins including a 1995-w ASE.
After resting closed at room temp for 3-5 years there was definate toning of multiple coins including the 1995-W ASE.
    A light golden toning.................

I wouldn't store any blast white silver coins in a wooden box again............ >>

    Best wishes,

Yeah I remember that MB, that went on for a while and I think you even did some testing on the wood, finish.... etc.. Wasn't there somebody here on the boards that did that kind of work but much more well put together "something Craft" I think cant remember the first name.

  • Hi INXS,

I recall you and your icon image I am genuinely happy some people changed thier minds about this image

Yes the seller's ID was Solid (firsat name Ken?) and he made OPEN cases that were never meant to be closed so they were safe and also the trays were anodized aluminum - perfect stuff. He can be found in the old wood threads.

I also just ran into this: Bosox - "...Last year around this time I bought one of the wooden PCGS slab boxes. After all the talk about whether they would damage a coin, I put it away with only two new cents (taken from circulation) lying on the felt in the bottom, raw, oriented heads up. The cents looked perfect and 100% red when they went in a year ago. Here they are now. Obviously each had a partial print on them that showed up. What worries me is that both toned a little bit. Maybe not the perfect test, but I just cannot bring myself to put my good copper in this box..."

    Thanks and best wishes,
    Eric

Take a look at This Box

    I really like them.

  • Hi there image

That is great - aluminum and anodized aluminum are considered among the best materials for coin storage from what I read. I am concerned about the black velvet though as it could be made from any number of fabrics and held with I don't know what kind of adhesive and the old threads show thses things to be a danger as well. But an aluminum case? Great!

    Best and thanks,
    Eric
