Reaching an understanding with a spouse when it comes to collecting coins.

My lovely wife has given me express permission to collect what I want with my own discretion serving as the only limit on spending. She demanded just one thing in return: No hangin' with SaintGuru. image

My wife gives me no restrictions, but I have nonetheless avoided flaunting coin purchases. My financial advisor, OTOH, has been a bit more strict with me. Neither one, of course, would approve of me hanging out with SaintGuru, so I keep that under wraps. image

So if you emptied your savings account on a coin, and said "look what we just bought honey!"....that would create no tension in the relationship?

I don't recall writing that. But the tension created by that situation would pale next to being seen talking to SaintGuru on the bourse floor.

I have a fixed monthly budget, and I never stray from that. This was my idea, and there are never any problems. My wife and I have built in an equal amount of "fun money" into our monthly budget, and so all of mine always goes towards coins.

I showed mine an auction catalog with a pic of the 1913 Liberty nickel on the front and said 'I'm thinking of buying this' ... she said 'that's nice dear - do whatever you want'.

I presume she meant so long as I had nothing to do with Saintguru. image

My wife has no idea at all how much I spend, what I spend it on, or even my motivation. All she cares about is that there is gas in her car and $$ for groceries. I tend to tell her about times when I do very well and for that she is completely and utterly uninterested all together. When I spent $5,700 on a penny and $26,000 on the 20th Anniversary AGE's she did not care at all. I am not rich by any means, but I invest wisely. Also, I don't hide anything from her. I show her what she wants to see when she wants to see it. I guess, thinking about it, she is pretty cool.

Yes, you're right. Permission of that magnitude implies a ban on hangin' out with SaintGuru.

I may not be the expert in these things, since my wife told me twenty five years ago that I had to decide - it was either the coin collection or her. I still miss her sometimes. But if she had given me that alternative (... express permission to collect what I want with my own discretion serving as the only limit on spending), who knows? Maybe we'd still be married. No, on second thought, I'm happy with things the way they are. I got the coin collection and the kids and she got everything else. How could you improve on that?

    That's classic! image

Edit: My wife deeply understands that a man needs his hobbies, or else things get out of kilter. image

First of all, I never spend more on coins than we can afford to blow in discretionary income that's left after paying all the bills and funding our retirement. Secondly, my coins go up in value more than my wife's shoes, and she knows it.

    So there's no problem here.

once or twice a yr. she says "so whatcha got now?"
she also knows where the coins and the spreadsheet is, so all is good image

she knows gold and silver are a solid hedge, and understands Numis. values, etc....

Okay guys, this is a lady numi's side of things, and I have to agree with all of you. Hubby knows I spend money, and he enjoys seeing my purchases, but he's finally learned not to ask "how much?" After spending over $2300 on a 1798 Bust Dollar this past year, I was hoping he wouldn't ask, but he did and I was truthful. I don't think he'll be asking again, as ignorance is bliss. I did have to part with my treasured 1909-S VDB to put toward that dollar because I'm building a Type Set and had to make a decision. So at least he knows there's give and take. I have no other vices, and figure what I'm building now is pleasurable to me and should be a good investment for the future.

And yep, this is my first posting. I've been "lurking" for about 3 weeks and have finally gotten the nerve to jump in. I'm enjoying the postings so much, have already learned alot, and look forward to much more in the years to come! I've been collecting on a small scale since I was about 10, stopped to raise a family, then got back into the hobby in 1998. Have gone from coin albums collecting cents and Mercury Dimes to collecting a lot of things... then since I couldn't seem to focus on anything in particular, I chose to start a slabbed Type Set a couple years ago and started a PCGS registry set last fall. I love all coinage and the history of it all, and it's fun to learn about the older coins as I start looking for one in particular.

I know, I got OT but that's a short introduction to me - I look forward to participating in other threads!

As for spouses, I think unless they ask a direct question, (which should result in a truthful answer), they're on a "need to know" basis! The smart ones probably know that they might not like the answer, so don't ask!

Okay, it probably isn't a vice, rather a good addiction. But if he finds out about the 2 platinum sets I just bought, my head may end up in a vice! shhhhhh

Yes it is fun, even painless, and thank you for the welcomes!

  • Hello mar327, it's good to have a woman's perspective!

My spouse's eyes glaze over whenever I mention Indian Head cents or my DMPL collection. I learned long ago not to repeat the experience!

Gas in the car, mad money is fully replenished, credit balances paid each month, and our retirement funded - I'm pretty much free to do as I wish.

I AM A HAPPILY MARRIED MAN!!!

a suspicious mind would think that she asked that so that she could be guaranteed that you would not find her hangin' with SG.
