The best Johnny Unitas Autograph there is! What do you think?

Hey guys,

Just saw this beautiful Johnny Unitas autograph, heres the Link. Wish I had the cash for this one, but i'm a Basketball fan, and have to save my money for something there image

I think this is is best autograph period, so for those of you who been wanting a Johnny U auto, well, now is the time! The card alone is very beautiful, and its numbered to 1500, but only the first 100 were autographed, which I think is a very great idea.

Sure there are cards numbered to less, but this card looks much better for a collection, and theres a FULL autograph, not some small ugly one like he usualy signs on those low numbered cards.

Like I said, I would buy it, but I would rather get something Basketball, to much for me for a Football card, but if your looking for his auto, now it the time. People will only hold on to this one for their personal collections.

While i'm at it, I was thinking of having a contest for my 1000th post, but I can figure out what kind of contest to do, any ideas? image

Thanks,

Giovanni

I've been watching that auction with a lot of curiosity for a number of reasons. For the record, the last one sold as a Best Offer of $400.

I will say that there's a better Unitas autograph from the same set. Scan coming...

    That card is GROSSLY overpriced.

REAL, vintage-cards with his auto will hold their value forever.
    Modern-junk will NOT.

Not in the greatest of condition, but I love it. Johhny couldn't have penned a more beautiful sig:

I like the Autos on the new cards. But give me a nice signed Vintage card anyday.

Says you. I'd suggest that people let people pay for and collect whatever they want, without other people slamming them for their choices, calling their stuff 'junk'.

I think that totally depends on the card.

"I think that totally depends on the card."

    ///////////////////////////////////

    Yup.

And, in the case of the subject

JOHNNY UNITAS AUTO /100 SP RARE 1999 DONRUSS ELITE PTT,

"the card" has virtually no chance of holding its value - compared
to a 59 TOPPS JU auto - for the next 20-years.

The subject card is "manufactured memorabilia." It is a fun fad, and
has nothing to to do with the historical reference that is required
to make ANY collectible a storehouse of value.

    Tribute-cards are fine to collect, BUT they are not the real thing;
paying moon-money for them is a BIG mistake, unless one does
not care about future value. Which is fine, provided those folks
are not misled into thinking they are "investing."

In the case of the single I'm compelled to agree with you. It's a signature card just like any other, regardless of the production number. Whether it's out of 100 or 500, at the end of the day it's an autographed card.

In the case of the dual autographed card I pictured above I think it's a different case. It's the only dual "on card" autographed card that Johnny ever did and just so happens to include Peyton Manning. I'd be willing to bet that I'll get what I put in the card 20 years from now.

Johnny U. consistently had one of the nicest signatures... like a lot of the old school guys, they took pride even in how they signed their name. It is a far cry from the all too common random scrawlings we see from many modern stars.

With regards to this card holding its value, I can't see it tanking... it isn't like Unitas is going to be signing any more items. It may dip should people lose interest in the set itself and there is less competition from those trying to put it together, but it has already been 8 years since the release and I do not think there will be a significant value loss if any.

I understand the allure of vintage over modern stuff... I have made that transition myself... but I just don't get why some people feel the need to trash other people's preference by deeming all modern stuff as junk.

You absolutely will get your money back. I remember guys saying the exact same thing about the Payton/Sanders dual from the same set. That card was $600-800 at the time. One closed last week at $2300. Definitely a bad investment....If you're looking for more than triple your investment.

Autos of the old-timers serve a great purpose, and in general, since 1997 they have done nothing but appreciate. As these guys pass on, their autos appreciate. Wait until Musial and Baugh pass, their autos will appreciate. Musial has enough out there that I don't think you'll see a huge spike, but when Baugh passes his stuff will spike and stay there. It happened with Unitas, it happened with Payton, it will happen with all the others. Especially the on card autos. I don't know why anyone would rather have a ball point pen signed version of a beat up vintage card over one of these. But collect what you want. I don't own either, but I certainly can appreciate that Unitas auto, it is a beautiful card.

I do not think anybody's collection is "junk," IF THEY like it.

I think "modern JUNK" consists of those items being pumped as
"investments" to people who will never know they messed-up
until they try to sell the items 20-years down the road.

"Collections" are for personal fun/enjoyment. They can be a
storehouse of value, or they can just be "interesting and fun."

I would love that card. In fact, I mentioned it in another thread. FWIW the question you see on the listing is mine. I asked if he would consider the offer. Not that I was going to offer $300 or anything, but I was going to make an offer of some form. Then again, I don't know what a good price is for something like that since I've never priced them.

So you don't think a Johnny Unitas auto card, regardless of year, is somehow a bad investment?

A vintage card with an auto is VERY likely a better long-term "investment"
    than a manufactured-memorabilia card with an auto/signature.

Nothing "wrong" with collecting either variety, for enjoyment.

Sweet card of an NFL icon. I would not mind adding that to my collection and I can see why
someone would spend some serious coin on that card. I also think the signed 57 is a great looking
card too. I think we will look back at this time 20 years from now and remember how
under priced all vintage football cards are right now. If I was looking for heavy investments
in the card market it would be in high quality vintage football. I think it just a matter of time
before you see a great return on this market. JMO.

I have several Unitas Autos, but I think this is my favorite one. I have never seen another one of these signed. It is JSA Authenticated.

    EXTREMELY cool piece, Allen!
  • Wow, amazing. Talk about a great piece of memorabilia as well as a beautiful signature.
  • Quite honestly, I love Johnny U and had the pleasure of meeting him a few times in my life - quite the classy gentleman. Here is my personal favorite, he signed it right in front of me so I have no worries about it being real....It will NEVER leave my PC...Sorry for the huge scan!!!!

Allen and 70Chip have some thing with their pieces that all the signed cards in the world can not replace and that is the memory of the In Person signing that comes along with their items. As they say in the commercial "Priceless"
