Yes, it really works. I have had 100% success!! Just make sure to keep a tight grip on the holder...oh, and wear safety glasses.
Trim each edge in about 1/8" (just enough to get inside the sealed seam, then the holder pops apart. Remember, cutting faster is better than slower. A slow push through the edge of the card gets the plastic hot. Wanna see my burn scars???
I use a Phillips head screwdriver and a hammer. Place the screwdriver at the top of the holder and give it a few good wacks...breaks apart. Be careful not to damage the card. I havent damaged one yet.
I just cracked open a bunch of them. I used a boltcutter to snip off one of the corners towards the top. Once that is done, its fairly early to wedge a small screwdriver in the opening and just gently pry it apart. The mylar sleeve offers a bit of protection too.
If you don't have a set of boltcutters, a large pair pliers might work also. Whatever you use, the goal is to create an opening towards the top (far away from the card) where you can wedge some type of prying tool. I recommend you use googles also 'cause when the plastic cracks, it shoots all over the place.
Thanks to everyone......I went with the wire cutters and clipped of the corner. Then slid a screwdriver along the edge and it popped open fairly easy. This 8.5 is soon to be a $400 PSA 9!
I would love to post pics but I'll wait til' after I get it back (or at least the grade is posted) from PSA. I'm getting paranoid that graders actually log on to these treads and check out the dialog. Okay....I'll take pictures of the cracked case....at least you'll see my handy work!
Collecting Interests: Ripken, Brooks & Frank Robinson, Old Orioles, Sweet Spot Autos, older Redskins - Riggins, Sonny, Baugh etc and anything that catches my eye.

With the help of a fellow board memeber.....here are the scans of my crack and sub. I bought the one on the left for $75 at a local card show. I didn't think it would get a 9 because of the small indentation in the foil. The 8 was a BGS 8.5 with 9.5. 8.5, 8.5, 8.5 subs.

That $150 8.5 turned into a $100 PSA 8! I'm glad the $75 raw card turned into a $375 PSA 9. .......the game continues!
Maybe they just put the wrong card in the wrong holder and mixed the two up. Crack the 8 out and resub... you'll probably get an 8.5 under the new system!

NOW THAT !!
Is too damn funny !
If you can't use your teeth , then all you have left is to use your imagination .
If I were going to open one of those holders I would use a dremel with a grinding disk .
