If Orlando Cepada is in the HOF, isn't Frank Thomas a shoe-in?

Please discuss.

Would appreciate all input from the studs on this board.

Frank Thomas is a HOF'er on his own merit. No need to compare him to anyone else.
"My father would womanize, he would drink. He would make outrageous claims like he invented the question mark. Sometimes he would accuse chestnuts of being lazy. The sort of general malaise that only the genius possess and the insane lament. Our childhood was typical. Summers in Rangoon, luge lessons. In the spring we'd make meat helmets. When we were insolent we were placed in a burlap bag and beaten with reeds - pretty standard really."

Can't make any decisions until Cansecos' new book comes out. image
  • If Thomas is never named in any steroid case he is a definite. If so, then he may go the way of Palmiero.

  • He is a lock unless some sort of 'roids scandal comes out.
  • No

Frank Thomas deserves to be in the Hall-of-Fame because he is a great player, not because of how he compares to drug users

I would be pretty surprised if Thomas is named. Though, I was also surprised by some names on the Mitchell report. That being said, I know Thomas has been critical of steroids and the shadow they caste over the game.

Thomas is a no brainer for me, he meets both the benchmark numbers (500 homers) and was the dominant player in the game in the early 1990's.

  • thanks for the input.

    I agree, too.
  • The Hall is now going to be very difficult. I guess we should go back to the All Star appearances type of thing. Was he the best at this position over his career type of discussion. Palmeiro was never really that great in any given year, he just kept going and going.

I'm not sure one correlates to the other. Thomas is in on his own merit.

The Hall of Fame becomes a slippery slope if you consider new candidates upon the basis of presently-elected, but very weak candidates.
I am actively buying MIKE SCHMIDT gem mint baseball cards. Also looking for any 19th century cabinets of Philadephia Nationals. Please PM with additional details.

IMO we might see a bunch of guys make the Hall now, especially after this Mitchell report. Hopefully guys like Hodges, Rice ect.. will get in now!
  • 500 is still a magic number for the Non Juicers. Frank Thomas, Jim Thome. they are LOCKS image
  • RonBurgundyRonBurgundy Posts: 5,491 ✭✭✭
Correct. The comments of the ESPN baseball nabobs notwithstanding, 500 is still a hallowed mark anyway. Most of the juicers are closer to or above 600 and they can clearly be seen - Bonds, Mac, Palmeiro, Suser, etc. - without reference to 500 HR's. Take those clowns away and all the rest above 500 deserve induction, as will Man Ram when he gets there next year.

    Who's Suser???

    Aha, Sosa!!
  • I think Thomas is a lock if no surprises come up.Do you think a guy like Goose Gossage will get in even though he cusses the sports writers (I think deservedly so)when they dont vote for guys like him & Rice and Blyleven.

The whole steriod thing makes me appreciate what guys like Thomas have done over his career. He should be a lock for the HOF.

Now imagine a healthy Ken Griffey Jr. over his whole career....his numbers would be incredible. Because of all this crap lately, I appreciate what Griffey did a whole lot more.

so true. I respect both these guys. I remember following them on the Beckett "Hot List" when I was a kid. For like 2 years, Thomas was #1 and Griffey was #2.

    such a good time.

How does Palmeiro & Roger Clemens being named as steroid users somehow make a borderline candidate from 40 years ago, like Gil Hodges, HOF-worthy? It's not like somebody being named as a roid user magically adds 75 HRs to Gil's total...

The same could be said for Mickey Mantle. Didn't he too have problems with his legs or something during his career that had he not had them, could've been even greater?
