Any downsides to shipping U.P.S.

I have a few coins in my collection that I've upgraded and was going to put these on E-Bay this week. I work Monday through Saturday and my hours are the same as the U.S. Post Office. We have a U.P.S. account here at work that I could use, and was wondering if I should use this, or just get off early and go down to the post office. Any info you could provide is helpful. I'm trying to avoid any shipping problems on my first E-Bay sales.

  • UPS is much more expensive than the USPS (I used UPS one time because the buyer wanted it sent that way and I was SHOCKED at
the price difference (I will never use them again).

I bet the Post Office delivers to your building and will be happy to pick up. Just pack up and have it ready.
Don't use UPS unless you have to.

  • UPS cannot ship any type of coins, money, or such.

    Please refer to the following:

Please read XXIII C. and E.

An alternative would be FedEx ??

UPS will ship coins, but they will not insure them if lost?

  • Perhaps someone could clairfy this, as I thought that PCGS is able to accept coin grading shipments via FedEx?

    FedEx Prohibited items ??

You are prohibited from tendering the following items for shipment, and they will not be accepted:

    A. Cash, currency, collectible stamps and coins.

FedEx will only accept them if you obtain coverage through a 3rd party insurer. If you choose to ship your coins via FedEx without a insurance policy covering the shipment, they will not cover them if they are lost or stolen.

  • Thank you, FLBuffaloHunter

To avoid the hassle, I would just prefer to send USPS-Registered and Insured mail for sure.

UPS is more expensive and, so far as I am aware, will not insure coins.

You can also use Express Mail with up to $5,000 insurance.

    USPS Registered Mail section 2.0

Gets a little confusing, but helped me understand, as I have not sent any coins to PCGS for some time.

  • As a recipient, I don't like UPS or FedEx. Nobody is home during the day, and it becomes a challenge to get to the delivery point to pick up the merchandise. Not nearly as convenient as the post office.

Unless you stay home all day or have a business address that can be used...FedEx and UPS are a complete PITA...

USPS has it's own share of potential problems but that's another story...
Re: Slabbed coins - There are some coins that LIVE within clear plastic and wear their labels with pride... while there are others that HIDE behind scratched plastic and are simply dragged along by a label. Then there are those coins that simply hang out, naked and free image

Interesting since the US Mint uses FedEx all the time? I guess the US Mint self insures since they make the doggoned things!

I have a ebay buyer that wants me to ship UPS, and I just called to get rates and the 1 800 rep told me that they do not accept coins for shipment but If I was to ship it anyways and it was lost or stolen I am S O O Luck. This buyer is ready to lose his bargain on my ebay auction. he has 4 negs of lost items shipping through UPS or damaged items on his ebay account. Now I know why these guys don't ship coins. This person seems scary to me.

  • UPS doesn't have access to the recipient's mailbox.

PayPal shipping and the Flat rate Envelopes from the USPS with insurance, online printing, and tracking of the package. All on the eBay/PayPal site where you are planning on putting the auctions up. And yes there are fees but to put it simple your time saved is worth the expense.
