Do they actually grade moderns or just rubber stamp them and collect the fee (this coin from across

I set out on a mission tonight to find a difference between the 2000 Millennium Set Eagle and a regular uncirc bullion piece.

I failed to find a difference but I did find my MS69 graded coin is a piece of crap. Do they actually look at this stuff or is the whole tube automatically MS69.

This coin is NOT a 69 but the label sure says it is. Dig the gouge by the B Jeesuz!!!! This coin has more hits than on it than a boy scout at Neverland Ranch.

I think you are micro grading a bit. Secondly what difference does it make its a coin worth melt unless it gets a 70 grade.
  • I don't think this is micro grading at all. I've photographed most of my eagles at this resolution and none of them look like this. But you can better believe I'm taking another look.

The mark by the "B" is a struck-through filament.
The marks above the hand, and especially the marks on the sun would knock it down below 69 in my opinion.

Send it back for a grade review! The struck thru shouldn't affect the grade of the coin.
It is not exactly cheating, I prefer to consider it creative problem solving!!!

If I understand correctly, a finalizer reviews the 70's otherwise 69's are seen by one grader.

Grade review is a good idea. They will send the coin back to you in a 67 or 68 holder and compensate you 50 cents for the difference in value!

Heh, maybe a bit lower. image
  • If you are sure those hits are on the coin, crack it out and enjoy your silver bullion. Sending it in for a grade review would be a waste of time and money.

The mark by the 'b' is definitely a 'struck through'... the others certainly detract from the 69 grade. Cheers, RickO

Now we have to get rubber stamps in addition to stickers on our slabs? image

Looks like a reason why modern NCLT may need stickering image

We could melt the rubber chicken to make the stamp. It's called added value. After all, the chicken arguably has more numismatic value than the bullion coins themselves.image

    What does CAC say???

Maybe we can take $15 coins and have them graded 4-5 times. Eventually the coin will be worth melt and someone will be out $75-100 in grading fees.

The only way to make $$ is get a MS70 and sell it fast. It's all about the numbers.

Shouldn't this post be... across the street?image

Like Daniel said about the "gouge" by the "B"...it is a strike-through error.

Without commenting on whether your coin is truly an MS69 or not, your scan does show that there is a clear difference between low end MS69 coins and high end MS69 coins, including "liner" MS69 coins that have a good shot at 70.

As far as the comment to simply sell the 70's as quickly as possible... in many cases, that proves to be the case, but clearly not all (and SELECTIVITY on what to keep is the key). For example, I sold a number of 1999-S DEL Silver PR70DC coins early on to my customers at around $1,000-$2,000/coin. I saw the latest piece just sold at Heritage recently for $17,250.00, even though the pop tripled from when I sold off my pieces to customers!! That $16,000 move up on (1) single coin covers (with plenty of change to spare) the coins that went from $500 to $250 in the other direction when one looks at their PCGS state quarter 70 collection in its entirely for example!

DEL Silver quarters in PR70DC were a "natural" to do well - they had all the trappings of a winner. Hence, the $16,000 rise (at least on that day at Heritage) on a $1,000 coin in about 7 years!! Be selective, be smart and happy New Year.

This is a common occurrence and a side effect to staring at thousands of 68s-69s-70s hour after hour.

just my opinion but I THINK a 70 should be reviewed by a TEAM OF GRADERS! image

You've made a good case for my oft stated point: stay on this side of the street for moderns. --Jerry

The "clear difference" is the fact that NGC, or any other tpg's, graded coins are nowhere near the quality of Pcgs graded coins!image
