What is the point in having Best Offer if you auto decline them??

There is a coin I was interested in, it had a Buy It Now of $175. I decided I would offer $140 and it instantly declined it, then I offered $145 and the same, then I decided to try $150 and the same auto decline. It auto declines offers of $25 less than the BIN, so what is the point of even having a best offer, I could see auto decline on $90 or $100 but $150 with a BIN of $175 makes no sense to me?

I have found that many things ebay sellers do make no sense.

I agree, $25 less than the buy it now price is ridiculous. I use the auto decline for amounts that are substantially below the asking price.

Apparently $140, nor $145 was your "best" offer. Is $150 your "best" offer? Try it at $155 and see what happens. image
  • If I we're a seller I would consider $100 for $175. I would decline of coarse but its the process. I like making a reasonble offer on what I seek, some are deals some are not. If its an auction then let it be an auction. If its buy now and make offer, consider all offers. What is so hard about this?????

Yep, auto-decline should be so you are not bothered by $50 bids on four figure coins. That close to the BIN is pretty silly, IMO.

I don't like it either. Most times you only get 2 bids so after that you have to BIN or forget it.

Well, first I can't offer anymore, you can only offer 3 times before you are blocked. After the $140 bid I remembered I had a $10 gift card so I figured I would try $145 then $150 to see if I could get past auto decline. No such luck and I would be bidding or offering on anymore of his auctions. Just don't want to waste my time.

The "Best Offer" feature on eBay may be one of its most useless options. I have made several offers on such items, always reasonable, and have always been turned down immediately. I now ignore any lot that has the "Best Offer" feature. It is now in the same category as lots that say "reserve not met."

That is about 15% under ask, which isn't a trivial amount.

15% under his ask price, but $150 is 30% ABOVE grey sheet ask price, see why I used best offer.

$25 on a few thousand dollar coin - yes, ridiculous. But $25 on a $175 'buy it now' is okay, if you ask me.
I use the 'best offer' on my auctions and don't auto decline anything. I think I'm going to change this. I get too many emails with people low balling me ($300 for a first spouse proof!)

Without seeing the coin, or knowing more, just quoting grey sheet doesn't help.
We all know that grey sheet isn't 100% accurate. Some coins are above it and some are below.
Also, the coin may have a nice look which could boost it...

  • It is an average run of the mill 1877-S VF-30 mid-grade trade dollar, just a type coin. I agree CDN is a little off on these, but not by that much.

Tch tch.....market must be slipping on these...he just got a couple of offers...one for $140 and one for $130....might make the $150 look like one he should have thought about image
    (autodeclined as well)

The offer might be 15% over a reasonable price though, no?

  • The auto decline is used to keep you busy trying to figure out how low they will go........it seems to work pretty good.....I'm just kidding

I've had buyers get an auto-decline message even though their offer was above the minimum acceptable amount. In one case he immediately bought elsewhere for $50.00 more on a $1000+ item. Contact the seller and do business directly.

I don't know. Maybe the seller actually wants $175 for the coin. (In truth, he's probably hoping the coin
will get bid up well over $200 by two or more people "who gotta have it.")

Maybe the seller wants to get at least 90% of his listing price of $175? I don't know. The seller could have it set up the auto decline everything that is less than 90% of their price. And I think the $150 you offered is about 87% of their price.

I just won a coin on eBay that I used the Best Offer feature and offered the seller $86.05 of a coin listing at $99.00. The seller accepted it and I was happy, as I didn't think he would. So you never know.

I'm not sure of this sellers agenda but in the past when I had items I was willing to accept trades on I would use the best offer feature in my store listings ( store listing then were very cheap advertising and could be cross promoted with reguliar auctons )

It's just another tool that can be used to your advantage or complained about .. If your a seller you can get a feel for what the liquidation point for a particuliar item is by the number and level of your offers ( especially if it's an item not in your particuliar area of expertise ) and if you get offers by the same buyer in one particuliar type of item it is a opportunity to build a relationship with a new customer, once you sell a customer something you can include a list of other offerings with the item shipped... etc etc

from the buyers end I believe the is a block for comments in which you could note your interest in multiple items or receiving a list of items the seller has for sale.. or even take the time to use the contact the seller option to express an interest and build a dialog.. ( the anticapation of future business may entice the seller to accept your offer for the goodwill it would create...

I'm not really sure why the seller has such a high auto reject on his auction but the best thing to do would be to ask them ... it might be as simple as he entered the wrong price in the block...
If you can't swim you better stay in the boat.......
  • The BIN with an offer would only work if the seller is not being unreasonable in his pricing- for the most part people see the Best offer and come in real low - ie $25 on a 175 item.

If a buyer uses a bit o common sense and studies a few particulars like the grey or for that matter numismedia guide- you can get a fair offer in and get the item.

But then there are a few dealers/sellers out there that think the papers they have are off by tons of money and you'll need a Brinks truck sittin at his door in order to get that one coin to fill the album hole ( circa 1964 kennedy)

  • On my higher end items, I always provide a Best Offer format. I have had a lot of luck with this. I never auto-decline, if they thow me an offer, it gives me an opportunity to start communicating with them and I throw back a reasonable counter if it isn't acceptable.
