An exciting oppertunity

I've become friends with an older man that has mentioned his Grandfather and Father's coin collection on a couple of occasions. He told me that a dealer that has sold coins to his Father over the years is now trying to buy the entire collection. The Father is in his 90's, in poor health, and is not capable of making that kind of decision. My friend knows very little about coins, but tells me he has three safe deposit boxes plus several folders at home full of coins.

Some of the items he has mentioned are two $1,000 bills, three bags of silver dollars (does not know what kind, but does not think they have ever been opened), more than one set of gold coins (thinks two or three), several three ring notebooks with plastic sheets full of half dollars, several brown books full of different coins, a lot of paper envelops with coins in them, and a lot of rolls of coins.

The friend has asked me to come look at some of the collection and give him an idea of what it might be worth and if the dealer is making a fair offer. It will be the second week in January before I have the time to look over the collection, but I'm really looking forward to seeing something like that. The family has quite a bit of money so there is a good chance that this might be a fairly major collection.

The last time someone asked me to look at their collection it turned out to be a large box full of pocket change. Maybe this time will be different - I hope so.

  • Wow! That is a big responsibility. Good Luck on finding a nice bunch of coins. Of course if you wanted to and had the money you might get to buy some of them. I personally would not have the money right now.
  • if he has anything worthwhile you may want to point him in the direction of one of the auction houses. Chances are he'll get more from the sale than a dealer buying the coins outright, unless they are generic or low value items.

That is exciting... if it is as described, be sure you have a cardiac unit standing by... that could be an overdose of thrills. Keep us posted... Cheers, RickO

Do you know anything about the dealer who wants to buy the coins? Reputation, etc?

To be fair to everyone and not affect your judgment, ask your friend NOT to tell you the dealer's offer before you have developed your number. Then you write your number on a sheet of paper and your friend writes the dealer's number, and you compare numbers. That way, your number is not affected by the dealer's number. Please remember that the dealer will generally be offering wholesale amounts so he can sell the items at a profit.

Sounds exciting! Let us know what you find!
