ANACS in Austin is GONE! - New Info Added

cmerlo1cmerlo1 Posts: 7,919 ✭✭✭✭✭
Just got off the phone with someone in the know who told me ANACS has closed it's Austin location and is moving to Colorado. Apparently, it was purchased by James Taylor and his company, Driving Force, on Friday. Today, everyone at ANACS here in Austin was let go. This is very disappointing. I'm also concerned about the coins I have there- apparently they are moving them to Colorado and will grade them and ship them from there. This is all I know right now- I'll post more info if I get any...

Would this be the same James Taylor who left ANACS to "retire" from the business?

I met Mr James Taylor from ICG and ANACS very business like creature. I wish him all the luck again at his New Location.

    Wow.

My immediate thoughts and hopes are for one of the really good guys in the coin world, John Roberts.
    When in doubt, don't.

Well...I do know James truly believed in what he was attempting with ANACS... and in our talks he expressed that it WAS difficult being in Austin with his family being in Colorado...eventually, his family won out and he did return there after leaving ANACS...

...he then went on an extended camping trip to "cool out" and soon after settling in he was contacted by ICG and offered a chance to return to them...

...as he explained to me, ICG is just basically a walk down the road from his home...so it was a no-brainer to accept the offer...after all...he loves coins and he loves the business...

...now, if this info is true, I'd be a bit surprised but very interested...he did have some good ideas and I did think he just might be able to pull it off...

... I do know that when the new owners bought ANACS and hired James...they gave him a green light and, as he put it, "a blank check" to turn ANACS around...

...my guess is that they didn't really understand what they had gotten themselves into...by the time Mary Counts got there and took a good look around...I think they might have said "oops"...

...haven't spoken with James in a while...maybe it's time to give him a call...

I will assume that James is no longer with IGC as this would be a major conflict of interest........ Perhaps a call to ICG would garner an answer ???

PCI liquidates. ANACS pulls this and who knows what will become of them.

Is ICG next? Or SEGS? Are we really going be down to just PCGS and NGC before long? I can't imagine this one can be blamed on eBay policy, like the struggles at PCI can.

Try checking your submission status online- that's not working either. Apparently no one there had a clue this was going to happen. When they got to work this morning, the space had been partially cleaned out...they were called into a meeting and told the news.

Any chance this move will result in bringing up their grading standards to match PCGS's? This is an opportunity to move the hobby closer to having consistent grading standards. They could easily move from #3 to # 2 very quickly.

Unlikely...if anything, their standarts would be in line with ICG. BTW, I disagree with your #3... In my book they've been #4 for a while.

Fired the day after Christmas? Damn that's harsh!

Do you think the coin has wear? If not, why is it necessary to tighten up when an AT'd MS-60 is basically exactly what it is?

Figures. Grades were due today on my order. I concur there's certainly an issue, the web site is not showing my order history and the 800
    number seems to be busy.

Sheesh. I do hope all the many GOOD folks at ANACS are well taken care of.

Maybe he is going to merge ANACS with ICG. Together, they may be more formidable than either alone. It could be a "New Day" at ICG.

ICG / ANACS merger seems the most obvious thing.

I always understood that all those changes at ANACS, the ones none of us here liked, were done by James. I agree with Russ, I do not see things getting better and if James was so darn good, why is ICG not the end all to be all. Seems he let everything stay at ICG just as it was when he left. Did he learn his lesson? Hey James, If your listenning, Get rid of that crap new holder and get the grading back up to par. In case you had not heard, PCGS is raisng those variety fees, sounds like a chance to go head to head with the competition...but what do I know, I am just a collector.

and then maybe they could buy PCI

a merge with 3,4, and 6 frequently bumps result up to 1 or 2 - good luck with that

Anytime from the 1st of Nov until a week after New Years would seem especially harsh with all
the holidays and then recouping afterward. Geez, what a time to loose a job especially with
the uncertainty of the direction of the economy.

Maybe the ANA will now buy PCI!

Put ANACS and ICG together, rearrange the letters, and it's CAC'S GAIN. Coincidence? image
  • EagleEyeEagleEye Posts: 7,677 ✭✭✭✭✭
James retired from ANACS because it was either Colorado with his family or ANACS in Austin. Tough choice!

The Anderson's have never sold a business, as far as I know, so I would suspect the ownership of ANACS is not changing, just the management.

Perhaps James is being offered a stake in the business. We'll have to wait until the speculation clears to see what the deal is.

As far as I know, James was THE driving force behind ANACS' success before he left and having him on board is a key ingredient to their future.

I say, Way to go! Great business decision! Good luck James!
